We Still Have Us

The elevator doors closed.

"So," said Sam, "what do you think?"

Mitchell shrugged. "About what?"

Sam raised an eyebrow. "Are we together in this universe?"

"I don't see why it matters," he said, and moved to kiss her. "We're together, after all."

She stopped him before his lips met hers. "I know it doesn't. I'm just curious. He didn't say anything, did he?"

"It didn't come up in conversation. Anyway, she's all over that Martouf guy."

"I can understand that," said Sam. "She cared about him, and he died. When something like that happens, you always wonder what might have been. Now she has a chance to find out."

"Wait a minute. So you're saying that she could be off finding out 'what might have been' " – he supplied finger quotes – "even if we're together?"

Sam shook her head. "I didn't say that. But since you brought it up, yes."

The doors slid open, and Sam walked out, leaving a confused Mitchell behind her. He stood there staring for a moment, until the closing doors snapped him out of it. He pushed past them and ran down the corridor after her.

"What do you mean, yes?"

She stopped. "Cameron, I was seeing Martouf for a while. We decided it didn't work out, and we broke up. If he had died, it would have been different. I wouldn't have known if it would work. Given a chance to find out, I know I would take it."

"And I would be okay with that." It wasn't quite a question, but it was hardly a statement of approval.

"She thinks he's going back to his universe soon. They won't have another chance. I'm sure you could forgive that."

"He's not going back to his universe soon."

Realization spread across Sam's face, along with a smile. "So, you're suddenly bothered by the idea that we might – break ourselves up?"

"The thought just occurred to me."

"I thought you said it doesn't matter."

"It doesn't."

Sam's eyebrow let him know that she wasn't convinced.

He sighed. "All right, it does, a little."

"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up."

"No, I'm kinda glad you did. It's funny, I guess. I didn't realize the problems involved with bringing the universes together until it involved you and me."

Sam nodded. The smile had gone away. "I know it's dangerous. But we agreed that it was the only way."

"I know."

"And we still have us."

"I know."

She kissed him. "Then don't worry about it."

A familiar twinkle appeared in his eye. "It doesn't bother me that much."

She smiled. "Good."

Their lips met again, but for only a moment before they were interrupted by a cough.

"Do you think that can wait 'til we're done here?" Daniel asked.

Mitchell grinned. "Yeah. Yeah. Coming." Nothing quite like screwing up another universe. But SG-1 was always thinking big.
