Everything seemed to be going like normal. The clock was ticking and time was passing effortlessly by, while Mr. McCrae kept on talking about some 20th century novel. Just another day in class. Another day without worries. But not quiet. There were two things that were out of place. Two. The first was what had happened last night. Last Night. Last night the most menacing thing that she had ever remembered came back to haunt her. And this time it wasn't any dream.
*Flashback*
Just as she was going to go to bed, saying good night to her mother and father did an eerie phone call shatter the moment. Her father, Luke, picked up the phone swiftly and could only utter one word before being interrupted.
"Hello?"
"Don't say another word. By now both you and your wife should have received the letters that deal with you handing in your daughter. We have been patient but our patience is running thin. This is your final warning. Give the girl up or suffer the consequences. We will still pay you and help you get on with her 'mysterious' disappearance. You have a week. We will call back to get an answer. After that it's over." Then with a sudden click the phone line went dead. The only reason she could have even heard the conversation was due to her enhanced hearing. But knowing that only made things worse.
"Luke, who was that?" Mom, she was always trying to make thing better. The optimist in our family. But in that single moment she had broken all of her records, all of her own values; she was upset.
"Marelina, its those people again." That was it. It was all it took for my perfect life to be shattered. The illusion finally broke, like I knew it would.
Now as she sat in the classroom staring detached at the window, did she truly realize what it meant. Yes, the clock kept ticking and class kept going.
