Part one:

No one had seen the famine coming. There were no warning signs and people were unsure of how the famine had started. It was 1845 and the famine was spreading throughout the island of Ireland. Many of the people of Ireland were forced to leave their home for a chance of hope with starting a new life without the dreadful famine following. Ireland started as many of her people headed to the docks and she knew where exactly they were heading to. It was either to the island Great Britain or to England's ex-colony, America. Though, Ireland had to wonder what made America so great that her people wanted to go across the ocean? She pondered this question as she headed back to talk to her younger brother, North. As she walked back she noticed that her two other brothers, England and Wales, were there as well. They seemed to be speaking of the issues of the famine. Furious with the lack of governmental help, Ireland marched up to England. England turned to his older sister, puzzled with the sudden appearance. "You! The stupid government has been no help to the issues!" Ireland shouted at her younger brother. North immediately stepped in front of his sister and Wales grabbed England's shoulder. "South, the government has more important issues to hand than this," England gritted his teeth. "What's more important than helping a group of people from dying?!" "South stop!" North shouted. Ireland stared at her younger brother and pushed him aside. "No! I demand a better reason!" Ireland face twisted with disgust. Wales stood in front of England. "South, please stop there is no need for violence. It'll just cause more trouble for us all." "You having trouble? Please enlighten me of your issues while I starve." Wales stayed silent, keeping Ireland away from England. "See you have no issues," Ireland breathed heavily. "You'll never succeed not if you act unladylike," England sneered. "England stop," Wales turned around and laid his hand on his little brother's shoulder. "Really? I'm unladylike? You're not even a gentleman! You-" "South stop! People are staring!" North hissed. Ireland turned and noticed some man were whispering while staring at her. She could hear that they were English with their accent and they were speaking of the argument. Ireland huffed and grabbed her brother's hand and started to walk away. "What's wrong? You can't find a single thing to say?" England mocked as Ireland walked away. "England! Will stop acting like an idiot and stop arguing with her!" Wales shouted. "Did you just talk back?" Ireland could hear England and Wales arguing. She felt bad for Wales as he can't really defend himself. Ireland and North headed back towards their house.

"Should we go back and apologize?" North asked. "No way, I am not apologizing to him!" Ireland shouted. North sighed and headed out to the garden for some hopes of potatoes. Ireland remain inside and soon she clenched her stomach in pain. "North? Is there any food left?" "No. I'm sorry but nothing is growing and we've run out of food," North clenched his stomach as well. A knock soon interrupted the two and North headed to answer the door. Who could've been? North opened the door to see England and Wales. "Oh! Hello again!" North greeted them. Ireland walked to the door to see it was indeed England and Wales. She noticed that Wales now had a bruised cheek, probably from England. She grabbed his cheek and silently apologized for not helping. Wales did not respond. "Ireland, we have some food that we think you'll like to have since we don't want to take the disease to Great Britain," England said handing her a basket filled with potatoes and fruits. "Thank you," Ireland whispered. England nodded and pulled Wales's jacket signaling the end of the interaction. They walked away and Ireland closed the door. "Where do you think Wales got the bruise from?" Ireland asked. "I don't know. Please don't be suggesting that, South," North said. "Yea, it was probably from England." "Maybe it was those Englishman who thought they had to teach him a lesson," North said. "Not a bad idea." Another knock was heard. "Come in!" South shouted. Wales entered the home. "Sorry, I should've told you that England didn't hit me. It was an Englishman who thought he could hit me since I was arguing with England," Wales smiled. Ireland did not believe him. She stood up and looked outside. England was by the door. "I need to talk to Wales privately. Do you mind?" England's eyebrows furrowed. "I did not hit him. Trust me," England looked at Ireland. "Sure you didn't." England sighed. "Wales! We need to go before the boat leaves!" Wales walked outside and nodded. They left and this time they wouldn't come back. "What did he tell you?" South asked. "He said that it was England but that the surrounding Englishmen were encouraging it." South knew it but did not say anything else. She proceeded to cook only two potatoes leaving the remaining 20 in the basket. North grabbed two apple and started to peel it. "At least we have something to eat," North chuckled. South nodded. "You know I've been thinking of going to America. I want to see how good his country is for all our people to go across the ocean." North looked astonished. "It's not a bad idea. Maybe you can find something that won't be affected by the famine. The boat leaves tomorrow morning, start packing up. I'll take care of the issues here while you're gone," North smiled. Ireland stood up and quickly packed all of her documents and clothes. She was ready to find out how America was better than they were.
