Mello was known around all of Whammy's as a violent boy. Someone who could not control his impulses. They weren't entirely wrong, yet, not completely right either. After all, he maintained a good composure and act in front of Near, the one he loved to call his rival. He was a blonde with hair cut in a girlish hairstyle, blue icy eyes that could pierce through anything. He loved to use black, gothic or leather clothing, not that anyone would complain about it, except for Roger…the stupid homophobe. So, what if he was gay? It wasn't any of the old man's business.
Now, he was anxious, mainly due to the fact he found out Near had just finished writing his own journal. Mello snapped another part of his chocolate as he made his way through the personal library of L, obviously, he would have all their journals. It wasn't long to find Near's, after all, it was the only one well cared for and white. Honestly, a baby would identify it just as easily. Munching on his chocolate, Mello sat down and began to read it, frowning slowly at the jabs made at him.
He never thought the albino would ever have the courage to speak like that to him. Then again, this was a notebook, so he wasn't really talking to him. The stupid bigheaded sheep had dared to write about someone who wasn't HIM. It made no sense to Mello as to why he was so mad at this development, but he was.
The blonde continued. Another chapter, this time transcripts of another journal, from…Ciel Phantomhive? Wait a minute, he looked back angrily. So not only had this boy fallen in love with this girl, but he also found out she was the lost queen?! The fucking missing link not even L solved!? He could only wonder if L, the one they considered their father, had already read this. It wasn't important to dwell on it, he needed to see what the hell Near had in that stupid sheep head of his.
Now, about the transcripts from Ciel's journal. He knew the dude, and thanks to this, many things started to make sense, for example, his old fashioned way of speaking at times. Ciel Phantomhive, the queen's mutt, and the other dude working on the Kira case. Not to hard to deduce he was the one accompanying 'Angel' in Whammy's as Chat. The thing that did surprise him was how depraved the guy was.
Starting with simple things, one, he was obsessed with this girl. Almost as much as Mello was with Near (not that he would admit it). Two, he fell in love with a dude and agreed to be in a polyamorous relationship. Do not get Mello wrong, he didn't think Polyamory was wrong, it just made no sense for the time period. Also, the queen trusted and loved him very much as well as this other dude, Alois…yet the little bitch ended up fucking his butler even when he had two already in his hands. Like, wtf. Greedy much?
Mello, for some unexplainable reason was extremely satisfied to know that Ciel had been abandoned by his lovers. The little bitch deserved it for being such a greedy hoe. He skipped the pages where Near explained and transcribed one more entry, there was no need to keep on with bullshit if he already got what he deserved.
And, his anger returned when he realized, this was all the story of a girl…of the lost queen.
This stupid girl he was talking about…Lady blanc. Yea, he still remembered when Near mentioned her. It also didn't help that in many entries he also put the songs he used to sing to Mello…turns out, they were sung by this bitch and that's how he learned them.
Quickly Mello took out a notebook of his own to write down the names of each song:
-Children of the night
-A dream is a wish your heart makes
-My favorite things
-Safe and sound
-How does a moment last forever
-Bonnie swans
-Hanging tree
-Falling in love with you
-Think of me
-History maker
-You'll be in my heart
-Hijo de la luna
Reading the lyrics of most, he noticed how tragic most where, or had too hopeful message. Mello did not like this bitch poisoning Near's mind. Much less did he like how unflattering he acted towards the albino. Terrible. He could have been kinder, but what else could he do now?
He started to analyze the first song to get every weapon in his arsenal ready to confront the albino. Children of the night had a mystical enchantment to it, no doubt, if magic were real, which it wasn't, this would be a spell. Calling for children to play was downright creepy, much more with these false promises of taking them out of their misery. What was this? Death? Maybe Azrael was real after all, Mello took note to check his bible again.
The next was a song from the Disney classic Cinderella. Something the titular princess sang to comfort herself, and here it seemed, it was to make Near happy. It was a great option too, for when Near sung it to the blonde it did soothe his nerves. Not much coming from it, yet it was an excellent tool of manipulation coming from the one who sung it. Mello wondered if Near had sung this in purpose.
My favorite things, coming from sound of music and serving same purpose. Mello recalled the younger albino singing it each time he felt hurt by the blonde's words or he fell asleep. Yet, lyrics always changed…
"Moonlight at night and hot-headed blondies
Bright white pjs and warm woolen blankets
Deciphering cases that haven't been solved
These are a few of my favorite things
Cream colored ponies and crisp apple strudels
Dollies and puzzles and schnitzel with noodles
Impossible smiles in a fake rivalry
These are a few of my favorite things
Girls in white dresses with blue satin sashes
kisses in stories and their happy endings
Silver white winters that melt into springs
These are a few of my favorite things
When she is gone, when he screams, when I'm feeling sad
I simply remember my favorite things and then I don't feel so bad."
Mello could see it was written for two people in particular. These were the lyrics Near had made specifically about him and the wretched lady blanc. Though, the only girl in white with a blue sash he knew was that other albino girl, Nymph Aizawa who would occasionally come and study with Near and was his best friend. He was too angry to keep on reading and over analyzing these songs.
He went on to the next section...and oh God was he even angrier, to the point he grabbed the chocolate and the notebooks, ignoring Light Yagami's questioning look and Matt calling after him. No, Mello needed to deal with Near. He walked into the room, deactivating the cameras as he entered, absolutely not caring about the consequences it might ensue and locked the door. Maximum ten minutes before L came or the cameras reactivated. He ignored Near's greeting and grabbed him by the shirt.
"You fucking kissed her?!"
Near looked at his hand, his eyes slightly widened when he saw his journal. He looked back at Mello blankly. Yet, Mello could feel the smaller albino shake in his hands.
"Who?"
"Don't play dumb you stupid sheep! Lady Blanc!"
"Mello liked her?"
"No you fucking idiot! But how could you do that! It's disgusting! She is now a criminal thanks to you!"
"I apologize to Mello for such inconvenience and deviancy…"
"Burn this thing, and I'll consider…"
Near nodded dumbly as Mello let him go, he took the notebook and followed him out just as the cameras had come back to life. L was obviously not happy, Mello would deal with the consequences later. Easily he could ask Z to help him calm L, after all she was the only one who could. Just like Matt and Near we able to do it to him.
"Mells! What the hell happened asked Matt with his console in hand.
"We are making s'mores soon"
"Yes…"said Near as if Mello needed backup.
"I'll go get the stuff!" said Matt doing a salute and running out.
"Mello...you better share those" they heard L speak monotonously through the speakers.
"Yes L…" answered Mello knowing his scolding wouldn't be as severe.
The two successors walked towards the roof, using the small grill L had brought for them to have some family time. Which wasn't done yet, but they couldn't blame him. Mello grabbed the notebook away from Near, placing it on the charcoal that was there already. Pristine white corrupted by the dark colors, defiled by them and soon to be part of it.
Near observed silently, as Matt started to run with all the ingredients and a cigarette hanging from his lips. Quickly Mello ripped it out of Matt's mouth and threw it at the notebook causing the brunette to grumble. The fire started to come to life Mello turned to Near only to hear him singing in a murmur the song of his favorite things. Yet, once again lyrics changed.
"My first kiss and my first love
An innocent heart and big blue oceans
The moonlight following my every step
These are a few of my favorite things
When my heart screams, when the page burns
When I'm feeling sad…
I remember some of my favorite things,
And I do not feel...so...bad…"
A lone silver tear, the son of the moon shed as her watched Matt eagerly start making s'mores. It was strange for Mello to see the boy show so much emotion, the blonde saw how the sun set, yet, no moon arrived. Near closed his eyes feeling his mother's consoling words in his ears. His mother the moon who hid herself to help him. To Mello, it seemed as if Near was glowing, the tears being cleaned by the wind. The albino was beautiful, even in such a distressed state, he was wonderful. Mello recalled how he used to go out and look at the full moon, reminding himself of the boy. Also, he recalled seeing him accompanied by the lady in white for a complete year. In that time, Mello dared not to come close, he had felt fearful of interrupting, as if the moon herself glared at him from the skies above. That was the main reason he never bothered Near on the full moon.
Maybe he had gone too far, by burning so much of the white boy's work. Mello sighed, walking towards him and hugging him tightly in his arms. Near's eyes widened, slowly reciprocating the gesture. He felt happy, relieved...Mello did not hate him. Maybe he would have to rewrite the whole thing, but he thanks the blond mentally for allowing him to condense the information in less chapters, and for forgiving him this way. Near smiled slightly, letting time stop around him.
"I missed you...My dear Mello…"
