So, I got a review on "Playing Santa" asking for an Abby-and-McGee New Year's piece…and while I don't usually write to order, the request combined with my love for the song "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?" gave me this. No spoilers, takes place any time you want (this year, way into the future, whenever). Happy New Year!!
Maybe I'm crazy to suppose
I'd ever be the one you chose
Out of the thousand invitations
You'll receive…
Oh, but in case I stand one little chance
Here comes the jackpot question in advance:
What are you doing New Year's
New Year's Eve?
Abby shut down the last of her machines and gave them a cheerful wave goodnight. "Okay guys, holiday tomorrow unless someone trips over a really important body. Rest up!"
Buttoning up her coat, she rode the elevator up to the squad room and stopped off to see if any of her team remained to be wished a happy new year. The main lights were dimmed; only McGee's desk lamps were still on.
She walked over and perched on the corner of his desk. "What're you still doing here?" she asked.
He glanced up at her and smiled, but didn't stop typing. "Just finishing up. Everyone else just left a few minutes ago. Lots of loose ends to tie up from that case"
Abby rolled her eyes. "Tell me about it. I just finished getting everything documented." She tilted her head for a better look at his computer screen. "Almost ready to go? I'll let you walk me to my car…" she said hopefully.
McGee smiled again. "Well, when you put it like that," he responded, "al…most…done." He hit save and began shutting his computer down. "Be with you in a minute."
It was cold for D.C., and a few snowflakes fluttered down in the glow of the parking lot lights. "What are you up to tonight?" McGee asked as they walked towards her car.
"One of my friends is having a New Year's party that I'm currently –" she grabbed his wrist and checked his watch " – an hour late for. Fortunately, Jenn's not the punctual type. Wanna come?"
He sighed. "Normally, yes. But my parents decided to host everyone they know for a New Year's brunch, which includes showing off their children, which means I have to pick Sarah up at ten to make it to their house in time. She's not pleased. Which means I have to be thoroughly sober and not-hungover to make up for her probable attitude."
Abby laughed. "Siblings. Gotta love 'em." She stopped suddenly, and since she was holding his arm, McGee stopped too. "Listen…"
Church bells rang out faintly in the air. "It's midnight," she sighed. "Happy New Year, Timmy." She reached up to hug him and gave him a peck on the lips.
Except that he didn't peck back. His hand was firm on her back and his lips were gentle but persistent on hers. Abby froze for a second in surprise, but after a moment she slid into the embrace. Warm mouths, cold air, and the faint music of bells fading away in the background.
As moments went, it was one for the books.
Finally, he stepped back, smiling. "Happy New Year?" he said, his voice rising slightly at the end. He shrugged a little sheepishly. "Felt like starting the year…unexpectedly."
For once in her life, Abby was completely speechless. She opened her mouth, closed it when no sound came out, and nodded instead, a smile tugging at the corner of her lips.
McGee took a deep breath and let it out in a woosh. "Got a little time before your party?" he asked, offering her his arm. "I'll buy you a drink."
She found her voice. "Yeah," she said, sliding her arm through his. "Sounds like a good way to start the year."
