This is a very short one-shot just a little thing in my head I wanted to write. Enjoy!
The Unread Letter
The study was silent except for the scratching of Kaname's pen. The Pureblood was focusing intently on every word that he wrote. He wanted to make sure his true feelings were conveyed and that they would not be misunderstood. There would be no mistakes in this.
Kaname paused in his writing and his mind wandered to the past.
::The sun was warm as Kaname looked up at the blue sky. Then he turned to look at the boy next to him and he smiled. "What are you smiling at?" Zero asked.
"You."
"Why?"
"Because…" Kaname reached over and took Zero's hand in his.
"You know what Kaname, we graduate next year. I can't wait. I want see all the world I want to do more then anyone has ever done before and I want you to come with me."
"I'll follow you where ever you go Zero." Kaname said and scooted closer to the silver haired boy.::
That was three years ago now. Kaname sigh deeply and looked back to his letter. There had been so many thing he and Zero were going to do after they graduated from Cross but that had all changed. That snowy day in October had changed everything.
"Honestly who ever heard of it snowing in October." Kaname mused out loud as he shook his head. But the memories of that topsy-turvy day would not leave his head. The image of all the snow outside piling up. The days off from school. The lonely days spent in his house unable to leave due to three feet of snow. Kaname remember it all as if it were yesterday.
Looking back at his half finished letter Kaname continued to write. This had been put off long enough. Today he would finish it. So he wrote and wrote and poured out his heart through the tip of the pen. It was nearly sunset when Kaname finished. He looked over the pages of his neat handwriting before folding it and putting it in the envelope and licking it closed. Standing Kaname slipped on his jacket and left to deliver the letter.
The October air was chilly but no where near cold enough for snow. How strange to be here three years later with such different weather. Kaname looked at the trees as he walked. The leaves were turning yellow and red, it painted a beautiful picture. But Kaname could care less about the natural beauty around him. He had something to do today. The browning grass crunched under his feet as he walked toward his destination.
Stopping Kaname leaned down and brushed leaves off the marble. A sad smile graced his lips as he knelt. "Hey Zero. I've got a letter for you. I'm sorry it took me so long." Kaname's hand reached out and traced Zero's name on the cold headstone. "You wrote a letter and signed your name. I read every word of it page by page. And the ending… that topsy-turvy day… was just perfect for you. I only wish you hadn't done it yourself." Kaname closed his eyes and held the tears back but he knew he couldn't keep them away forever.
A gust of wind blew Kaname's hair into his face and he opened his eyes. The sun was dipping below the horizon now. With a deep sigh Kaname set the letter down on the grave. He stood and walked off.
Kaname left three words unspoken.
But it was all in the letter no one would read.
Besides Zero already knew.
