Why was she here? Sakura's mind reeled with the possibilities.

The only thing that was certain was the darkness, the darkness and the smell. It was rank. The deep, potent, unmistakable stench of death; and Sakura had to repress a shudder at its icy fingers pressing against her flesh. The fingers of a dead man.

His betrayal.

Drip.

His footsteps echoed through the shallow gauge in the rocks which Sakura was not sure could be quite classified as a cave. Why was she here? Sakura pressed herself against the wall, the rock gritty against her cheek. Her breathing came in ragged gasps, a vain effort to quieten her lung's rattle; and Sakura paused to wonder, just when she had started becoming afraid of the man that she undoubtedly loved.

Drip.

Love… it had become clear to her now that her feelings went beyond an immature crush, as the rush at seeing his features heightened to greater altitudes. That feeling in her mind, soul and pit of her stomach. But that may have just been the utter terror, which gripped her being as he leaned in. He'd gotten paler, his skin looking almost waxen in the poor light. The features of the boy she once knew were no more, there only remnants left behind in the form of their gaunt corpses.

She could feel it, his icy breath on her lips. There was no body heat. There was nothing but chilling cold in the cavern- cold and the rushing heat pumping through her veins.

He pushed her back, slamming her against the stone, Sakura struggling not to gag at the scent of blood on his breath. She hopped dearly that it wasn't his, but any other possibilities were too horrific for her to even consider.

Drip.

His hands gripped her wrists, greasy hair brushing against her face.

Why was she here?

"Sakura…"

His eyes. This was not the boy she'd once known, nor the man who'd fought her years later. His eyes were blank, the hint of insanity growing with each move he made.

"Sasuke…"

She pulled at his hold, but he was on top of her, pushing her down.

"You're not going to leave, right? You'll stay?"

This was wrong. This was so very, very wrong. Why the hell was she here?

One hand left her wrist to slide across her face, a caress that at any other time would have felt too good to be true- no, would have been a dream come true. Now, it felt more like a horrifying, paralyzing nightmare.

So why were her eyes still shut in bliss at the contact?

And why was she here?

Drip.

"Sasuke…"

"You'll stay right?" He was grinning, that horrible, insane smile so different from the smirk she loved. What had happened to him?

"…please…"

"I don't want to be alone with him…. So stay?"

Drip.

And it became apparent, in a startlingly clear moment, exactly why she was there.

And at the sight of Itachi's dead body hung up to the stone, the nails driven through his arms, the sight of his bloodless corpse, withered, dried up face and gouged out eyes, the blood falling… Drip.

Drip.

Drip.

Drip.

…the sight of Sasuke grinning, leaning even closer, his lips nearing hers…Sakura screamed, a horrifying shriek and gave into…. her insanity.

Drip.

Drip.

Drip.

And from his place on the wall, Itachi watched.
