Chapter One: Mother
Avalon had never had a mother. Her cruel father had raised her as a slave to do all of his work. The man had turned her into a hardened 12-year-old who didn't trust anyone but herself. Then the dwarfs visited.
A knock on the door. Avalon's father growled at her to get it. The small family hardly had any visitors in their cottage in the woods. Avalon hurried to the door, then opened it to see seven dwarfs standing there.
"Is this the home of Avalon and Robert?" Asked one.
"Yes, it is." Avalon didn't trust these newcomers, "Why?"
"Avalon," said one, "We should probably come in."
"Oh, yes." Avalon said, using common etiquette, "Father! We have visitors." The man grunted.
The dwarfs walked in, all in a line. They introduced themselves one at a time as they walked past.
"Doc"
"Grumpy"
"Happy"
"Sleepy"
"Bashful"
"Sneezy"
"Dopey"
Avalon nodded and led them into the sitting room, which was clean, by her. If it wasn't for her, the room would be littered with trash and dust. Robert sat in a rocking chair, looking at the visitors angrily.
"Who are you?" He growled. They repeated their names one at a time. Robert looked shocked.
"Why are you here?" He regained his gruff voice.
"Your wife." Said the one known as Doc. Robert once again looked shocked.
"She's getting married." Said Bashful quietly. Robert growled.
"She invited Avalon." Added Happy.
"Not you." Finished Dopey.
"You.. She... Avalon will not be going!" Exploded Robert.
"His wife?" Asked Avalon, "I have a mother?"
"Yes," Said Grumpy.
"She won't go! I forbid it!" Robert looked very mad now.
"But-" Avalon cut in.
"No!" Robert yelled at the dark-haired girl. The dwarfs looked upset.
"Could she-" Dopey began.
"No!" Robert cut him off.
"What if-" Doc started.
"No!" Said Robert once again. Avalon now looked upset.
"Go clean something!" Robert shooed away the girl. Avalon walked away sadly, anger at her father burning in her heart. She heard yells and a muffled, 'very well' and the door slamming. For one second, she had a mother. For one second, she had hope. And now, nothing.
Later that day, Avalon got an idea. While cleaning his room, she stole his fathers sword. While making dinner, she stole some food. And she also took his favorite shirt and burned it in the fire. Her father was in an angry haze all day, so he didn't notice anything. And then, under the cover of darkness, Avalon prepared to leave her home. She stood by the door, after knowing her father was asleep, staring at the forest around her. She was about to leave. No matter how horrible, this had always been her home. Avalon wondered if she was not prepared. She had a sword, and food. Hopefully that was enough. She turned towards the old cottage where she had grown up.
"Goodbye." And with that, Avalon ran into the forest, a singe tear shining in the moonlight.
