Coop says she wonders about me these days. She says she's worried about me. I tell her she's never bothered with me before, so why start now?
Her shoulders go all slouchy and her mouth tightens into a thin straight line before she answers, "You've changed, Summer," and walks away.
And I haven't changed, I'm sure of it. Coop's just way too wrapped up in her own life with Ryan to see what's right underneath her nose.
Ryan. I've tried to endear myself to him, to right past wrongs, but he always just turns away. I have no idea exactly what I did to him, but he acts like I'm some kind of whore or something. Like he's exactly saintly. Just because it wasn't his kid Theresa was hauling around he bailed on her and came back to Newport like it was all okay. Like nothing had changed at all.
If Seth was here he would have said to give Ryan a chance.
But Seth's not here. I want to hate him, to despise him even. Leaving without telling me, or even worse, his parents. And all he left for us to remember him by were two letters. Two worthless notes explaining why he couldn't deal with the shit going on around here and ditched us. Ditched us for his dream of leaving Newport forever. Like the rest of us mattered nothing to him. It's ironic, when you think about it. Two years ago I couldn't have given a damn that Cohen existed, and now it's his loss that affects me the most.
Daddy tells me everything happens for a reason, but somehow I just can't believe that.
