Disclaimer: All Anita Blake characters belong to Laurell K. Hamilton, not me! I am making no money off of this, nor do I actually have any money as I fall under the 'poor college student' group of the US.
Also, no this isn't your everyday Elizabeth either. She's been taken out of the books and thrown into an RP environment, and then into this fic. So keep in mind that she'll be different.

The apartment was quiet. Not the quiet where sounds filtered in from the other apartments. No. Today was one of the few truly peaceful days where everyone seemed to be gone from the building. Elizabeth guessed that most of the people were either at work or off to join their families for the upcoming holiday.
Between everyone in the building gone and Caleb out with some buddies, the apartment was as quiet as a graveyard. And Elizabeth valued the quiet more than anything. It wasn't silent, not really because when left in this heightened sense of quiet, her brain worked far too much for her to consider it silent.
She was currently curled up contently in the window seat, and had been for a good while. It seemed to be her favorite place in the whole of the apartment. Though, that knowledge was a little odd to her because as a kid she had been afraid of heights, but here she was on the tenth floor of an apartment building, sitting and looking out the window.
The clouds outside were the big, fluffy ones that seemed to promise snow or rain. It was, currently, still too warm for snow, though you wouldn't know it by the way the people down below her were bundled up. Despite the snow-less weather, the air had the cold wind that told of the snows to come. But, it rarely snowed in November.
Like all peaceful moments, they don't last forever. Even when wished that they would. The shrill sound of the phone broke this specific peaceful moment, though it didn't startle Elizabeth. Somehow, she had half expected the call. She tilted her head to glance at the phone, but made no move to actually answer it. She didn't really feel like dealing with people at the moment, and if it was an emergency she'd hear it through the answering machine.
It took seven rings, but the machine eventually picked up the call. The apartment became quiet for a moment as the caller was getting the 'Elizabeth and Caleb aren't home' speech. During that quiet, she turned back to watching the world outside her window. i 'It's probably just a telemarketer.' /i
The voice that came through the machine had a southern accent to it, and was definitely female. And while Elizabeth hadn't heard it in years, she knew the voice. It had changed a little with age, but she had no doubt of who it was. And that made her turn back to watch the machine, as if the person would burst from it instead of just a message. "Liz? It's Rae..." Elizabeth's arm gave a small twitch towards the phone, but she stilled it. A small part of her wanted to pick it up and talk to the woman on the other end, but a bigger part said that too much had happened for everything to be alright and it wasn't the time to fix that. So she sat and just listened to her sister's voice. "I'm going to be in St. Louis for a bit and I was hoping that maybe I could visit you...Give me a call on my cell if you get the chance..." After the number, which Elizabeth had mentally memorized and stored, Rae hung up.
Elizabeth continued to watch the phone and the machine for a while after the silence came back to the apartment. She needed time to think before she called her sister back. So, while it took effort to do, she turned back to the window to watch the people. Though, it wasn't as enjoyable now as it was before the call.
