Winter, 1992 London, England.
The headquarters of the Council of Watchers was abuzz with activity when Rupert Giles entered the main building. Word had reached all the Watchers that Merrick had been killed in L.A. It was also rumored that the late Watcher had left a Will, but Rupert Giles wasn't one inclined to listen to rumors.
He was quite surprised however, to learn that the Chairman had wished to speak to him. About what he wasn't certain. Still, if he wished to be active in the field, orders must be obeyed.
So, here he was sitting in a bland waiting room anxiously waiting his turn to speak with the head of the Council. Trying not to fidget in his seat Giles took a few deep breaths to calm his nerves. It was not quite ten minutes later he heard the secretary call his name.
"The Chairman will see you now," she informed him. He thanked the woman and headed toward the Chairman's office.
Rupert Giles stood nervously in front of a giant oak door, straightened his shoulders and knocked on the door. "Enter." The Chairman said.
"Good evening, Chairman. You wanted to speak with me?" Rupert asked. The older man nodded. "Yes I do, Mr. Giles. Please sit down."
The young Watcher sat down and waited. "I'm sure you're curious as to why I summoned you." The Chairman said.
"I was sir."
"Do you have any questions?" The Chairman inquired.
"Just one sir: Is it true that John Merrick left a Will?"
"It is," the Chairman replied. "And you are named it."
Rupert Giles was speechless. It took him a few minutes to compose himself. "May I ask: Why?"
"I can't really answer that Rupert. All I know is that John Merrick left something or rather someone in his will to you." The Chairman replied. "Can I get you a glass of water? You're looking a bit flushed."
"What? Oh, no, thank you sir." Giles said somewhat distracted, then asked: "Chairman this er, person that Merrick left me, who is it?"
The Chairman glanced at the paperwork on his desk. "His slayer's name is Buffy Summers."
