Chapter 1 - Bittersweet Remembrances

The sun shone brightly overhead, a stark contrast to the melancholy sadness that filled Misato's heart.

Around her stood many people. Some she knew quite well, others not so well. Yet all were today bound together by their common sorrow.

They were gathered on a small hill overlooking Tokyo-3. The hill had held a special meaning, once, but no more, not after what had happened.

Even Commander Ikari was there, standing off to one side, away from most . His cold barrier was gone now, shattered by the horrible event of three days ago. Fuyutsuki stood next to him, another soul consumed by sadness.

Beside Misato stood Kaji. Like most of the assembled, he was wearing full NERV dress. His face was clean shaven. His eyes held no hint of their usual humor.

Those assembled were from NERV, all save three. Hikari Horaki, Toji Suzuhara, and Kensuke Aida stood next to each other, expressions of sorrow and disbelief on their faces.

No priest spoke. There was no need for one. None of the three had been religious.

Unbidden, Misato's thoughts kept going back to that horrible day, again and again.

The three pilots had been walking towards NERV, with nothing planned except synch tests. Gunmen had appeared seemingly out of nowhere.

Section-2 hadn't been fast enough.

The three young heroes had never stood a chance. 'My poor children,' Misato thought, tears coming to her eyes. 'They were only fourteen.'

NERV had found out who was responsible. It'd been some nameless little terrorist organization, with nothing more than a petty vendetta against those in power.

Misato had made them pay. Every single one of them.

Finally, the commander stepped forward and spoke. "In their short lives, they knew nothing but pain. Yet they overcame that and fought to protect others." His voice thickened as he choked back a sob. "They shall be remembered."

Misato stared at the last Ikari. He looked as if he had aged ten years in the past few days. He had never tried to bridge the gap between him and his son. Now, he would never have a chance to.

She started crying, remembering scenes of everyday life of just a week ago.

She couldn't have been more surprised when the three pilots had started spending time together outside of NERV. Asuka had said that it was nothing more than a team-building experience, but Misato could see the almost tangible feelings between the pilots, something that had been new to all three of them; friendship.

They had been happy.

They had been smiling.

They had been alive.

Misato Katsuragi broke down sobbing on Ryouji Kaji's shoulder. He held her, tears coming to his own eyes.

The once-unshaven man stared at the grave markers. The three of them stood alone on the hill, much as their owners had in life. 'Goodbye,' he thought sadly.

Author's Notes
A few minor changes were made. Nothing major, but I just wanted to give it a slightly better flow than before.

I'd originally had a complete continuation for this story written, reaching all the way to the EoE equivalent. After looking back on what I had planned, however, I decided to just scrap it. If I can figure out a way to remove the ridiculousness of the continuation, I may someday post it.

I doubt I'll ever do it, though. The nature of just what the continuation is really limits my options.
