Never Hit a Girl
Age 6
"Parker, I want you to never hit a girl." Daddy was looking at me with a serious face.
"Why?" I asked.
Daddy and I were in the diner; Dr. Bones was meeting us here for dinner. We had ordered fries and drinks and were eating those while waiting.
"Because, you have to be respectful and nice to girls, or they won't like you." Daddy smiled at Dr. Bones as she sat down and said hi.
I scrunched my nose, "I don't want girls to like me!"
Daddy put his arm around Dr. Bones' chair, "Someday you will, Buddy. So, never hit a girl."
"Okay." I placed my chin on the lid of my cup.
Age 14
Jillian Dodger was the prettiest girl in my class. I had her in four out of my seven periods freshman year. That's a lot. Jillian had dark brown hair and green eyes. At lunch I was walking back to the cafeteria after taking a make-up test when I heard someone shout,
"Get away from me, Derek!"
It sounded like Jillian. I turned the corner in the hall and there she was. She wasn't alone though, Derek Jacobs was holding on to her arm. Derek was the freshman football team captain and it was common knowledge that he had a thing for my Jillian. Wait, just Jillian, not my Jillian.
"Let go!"
"Come to homecoming with me, Jilly." I saw Derek's hand tighten around her arm.
"In your dreams."
"Come to the dance with me!"
Okay, that's enough. My dad had told me never to get into a fight unless you had a reason. Well, this was a reason! Derek was hurting Jillian! I went over and put my hand on Derek's shoulder,
"She doesn't want to go with you."
"Stay out of this, Booth." Derek shook my hand away, "You are coming to the dance with me Jillian!"
Suddenly, I heard a slap. Jillian was on the ground with her hand on the side of her face. Derek had hit her! Dad once said to me to never hit a girl. Well, Derek was going to pay now. Without even thinking I grabbed the collar of Derek's shirt and punched him.
"Never hit a girl, you ass!" I said to Derek who was lying on the floor of the hallway.
I turned around to Jillian. She was still on the floor but I gave her my hand and helped her up. She held my hand when she was back on her feet.
"Thank you, Parker." Jillian kissed me on the cheek.
I blushed, "Uh, no problem."
Jillian's cheek had a red mark on it; it looked like it still hurt.
"Can you walk me to the nurse?" Jillian asked. She was still holding my hand.
I was too shocked to speak so simply nodded. Jillian giggled. She held my hand all the way to the nurse and wanted me to stay with her while she got checked out.
Derek got suspended for hitting another student; I was home-free because I was defending someone. Next period, Jillian told all of her friends what I had done and how chivalrous I am. After class, I finally plucked up the courage to ask Jillian on a date. She said yes!
Guess my dad was right. Someday you will want a girl to like you. So, never hit a girl.
