He was waiting for her by the door, dressed casually in a pair of grey trousers and a sweater and Bree felt glad that she had decided against changing into something more formal before meeting him.
She hesitantly walked over to him, unsure what to make of the situation- he had sounded so strange on the phone, almost as though he was actually hoping she would agree to have dinner with him, not at all sounding indifferent and cold like he usually did while talking to her these days.
"Hey- I´m glad you came."
Rex smiled at her and Bree managed a small smile herself, she felt strangely vulnerable and she knew that it was because she was allowing herself to hope instead of remaining alert and suspicious and most likely that attitude would get her hurt all over again but she couldn´t help it, she was missing him and the sudden change in behavior on his side had her back on his beg and call in an instant.
"Hi."
Her voice was soft, almost tender as she looked into his eyes and when he placed his hand on her arm to lead her inside the restaurant she trembled at his touch.
If he had felt her reaction he didn´t let it show, his hand now on the small of her back as he stirred her towards their table.
He had ordered her favorite wine and when he pulled out her chair for her, Bree began to wonder if this might all be a trap, another attempt to make her feel safe before dropping another bomb on her, maybe this time he wanted to tell her that he wanted to give up on their marriage for good, that he was serving her with divorce papers...
"Bree, are you ok?"
He sounded concerned and Bree hastily nodded but her attempt to smile didn´t go as she had planned and a small frown formed on her husband´s face.
"No, you are not- tell me, what is it?"
Bree almost laughed at the stupidity of the question, how could he ask her something like that when he hadn´t talked to her outside their marriage counsellor´s office for weeks.
"It´s nothing" she mumbled as she reached for her wine glass, hoping to distract him but it didn´t work.
"Just tell me, why is this so hard for you?"
He demanded, his hand catching her´s and firmly holding it on the table.
Bree looked up and studied his handsome face, the features so familiar and yet so different from the young man she had married- he had grown up, the charming boy had changed into a man, there were few lines but his eyes had lost their careless sparkle, mirroring knowledge and experience only years could bring and as Bree watched him she had to admit that it made him even more attractive.
"Why are we here, Rex?"
He hesitated and she knew that he was wondering wether or not to accuse her of asking him something in return instead of answering his question but then he obviously decided against it.
"I didn´t plan anything, Bree, I simply thought it would be nice to have dinner with you."
"And what made you think that all of a sudden? You havn´t been interesting in talking with me or even in looking at me in weeks."
He sighed, already frustrated with her but Bree was beyond caring, she needed him to be honest with her and his attempts to keep the situation at ease was too much for her tight nerves.
"Look, can´t we-"
"No, Rex, we can´t. At least I can´t, I´m sorry."
Bree withdrew her hand from her husband´s and took a sip of wine to hide the sadness that was overcoming her when she realized that the evening eventually would end as all their time together ended now, with him walking out on her and her being left behind more heartbroken than before.
