Reading City of Ember
A/N: I've read a lot of reading the hp and twilight books fanfiction and it got me thinking why no one had done this. So here it is…
Chapter 1: Discovery
The week before Assignment Day in the year 241, Miss Thorn found a stack of books she did not recognize on her desk. What in the world? She
thought, picking one up. It read City of Ember. I've never seen this before… Suddenly, a note fell out.
It read:
Dear people of Ember,
In the emergency that a mayor loses the instructions, it is important that you read these books. It has the way out of Ember if the city is ever in
disrepair.
The Builders
A whirling of thoughts entered Miss Thorn's mind. Is this really from the builders? What are the instructions? There's a way out of Ember? Isn't it the
only light? What should I do with these?
She decided the best thing to do would be to show them to the mayor. She went to the Gathering Hall. She was stopped by Barton Snode, the assistant guard, as usual. " What brings you here today?"
" I have something to show the mayor." She replied, handing him the letter from the Builders. He scanned it, then said " This seems very serious. I'll show it to the mayor right away."
"Thank you."
The mayor had been in his basement office doing whatever mayors do when Barton Snode interrupted. He was slightly annoyed by it, but asked " What is it now?"
"There is something you ought to see, Mr. Mayor." Was the reply. He was handed the note. After he was finished reading, he felt slightly alarmed. Instructions? He didn't know anything about Instructions. Was he supposed to? He reread it. Yes, it definitely seemed as though he was supposed to.
"Well?"
" May just be a prank. I suppose we should read them though, just to be sure. Who found these?"
"Um… Miss Thorn, from the school."
" Thank you. Please send out a notice. Tomorrow everyone in Ember needs to be here at the Gathering Hall by 9:00 am. "
" Yes Mr. Mayor."
The next day , everyone was at the Gathering Hall, waiting. What could possibly be so important that everyone in Ember needed to be in attendance? Several people were hoping that they'dd found a way to save the generator, or perhaps found a secret storeroom stocked with stuff they needed.
When the mayor began his speech, most of the people were shocked. Some thought that listening to a book was wasting time. Others thought what the mayor originally thought. It was a prank. It had to be.
"Alright," the mayor cleared his throat, " the first part is The Instructions."
