The Engineer was, in fact, deep in the sewers underneath the fort. It was the most secrative place he could find, unfortunately. He had boarded up the front entrance to the sewers so no BLUs could interrupt him. However, he didn't have enough wooden planks to cover the back entrance, and prayed that none of his teammates walked in on him. He was working on a secret project: His fifth machine. He wanted to surprise the rest of the team with it, and he needed to make sure none of them found him working on it.
Suddenly, he heard slow, faint footsteps in the water. He looked down the path, but saw nobody there. He immediately knew who it was: He had made the Spy a new watch that recharged itself so long as the Spy wearing it stood still. the Spy was probably testing it out down here. Frantic and trying to sound as casual as possible, the Engineer looked at thin air and said,
"Hey, pardner, you testin' out that new watch thingamajigger I built for ya?"
Even though he couldn't see it, he knew Spy was surprised at the fact Engie found out he was there.
"Strange, nobody elze on ze team noticed me vith zis watch activated," Spy said as he deactivated his cloak. "I am guessing ze vater made my location obvious?"
The Engineer, quickly trying to get the Spy out of the sewers, said, in an extremely unconvincing voice,
"Heh, yeah, that pesky water, heheh!"
Spy sharply raised his eyebrow at this strange sentence.
"Engineer? Vhy are acting so strange? And vhat iz zat blinking light behind you? Are you doing somezing I should know about?"
Engineer made a move to scratch his head, but quickly remembered he was still wearing his hard hat.
"No, no, pardner, There ain't nothing behind me, I swear by it."
Engie lifted his arms up in a surrendering position, and as he did this, Spy noticed a peculiar mechanical sound come from under his glove.
"Ahem, Engineer, your hand?"
The Engie, realizing the Spy was on to him, stared with a puzzled look at his left, ungloved hand, hoping to make the Spy give up. He didn't.
"No, your right hand. I am certain I heard an odd noise come from under zat glove."
He wondered if changing the subject would throw the Frenchman off.
"I think the battle's startin' soon, you best be off, go backstab some Heavies, maybe sap some BLU sentries, hah."
The assassin stood rooted to his spot, and he stared at Engie. That was one thing everyone hated about Spy. He had the ability to stare at you, straight into your soul, and make you afraid to even move. Scout had dubbed it the "Speye".
After what seemed like hours, the Spy finally stopped staring. He turned around, and before walking away, muttered out of the side of his mouth,
"I am going to find out vhat you are up to, Engineer. You know I vill."
He walked away slowly, and Engineer's stomach dropped. Spy was very intelligent, and he would find out. He knew it. He was perhaps the only sane person within five hundred miles, and he always stuck to what he said. Frightened, Engie jumped and spun around, his hard hat spinning around wildly, running back to work on his creation.
