They were both broken no matter how they looked at it. Katniss would stare at the walls with tears streaming down her face while Johanna stared blankly into space. The war was over and the losses that had come with it broke them. Katniss lost her sister and that was what finally broke her. Johanna lost Finnick. He was the only one she allowed to get close to her after her games. Well that was before Katniss came along and made her fall in love again.
"Kat?" Johanna never took her eyes off the wall in front of her as she spoke to the other girl. Katniss wiped the tears off her face and looked at Johanna.
"Yeah?"
"How you feeling?"
"Same as usual. You?"
"Same." Johanna replied quietly. "Come sit with me." She finally took her eyes off the wall and opened her arms for Katniss to join her. Katniss pushed herself off her bed and walked into Johanna's open arms and allowed her to pull her down beside her.
"I don't know how to move on." Katniss whispered quietly as she buried her face in the crook of Johanna's neck. She felt hands stroke her hair softly.
"Moving on is the hardest part but I'll be beside you."
"We'll help each other Jo." Katniss said as she looked up at Johanna's face. She saw a smile grace her face. Neither had smiled in over three days since they learned of their loved ones deaths. Their hearts were broken.
"Are you moving back to district twelve?"
"Close. I want to move into the woods. To be free." Katniss smiled as thoughts of her father crossed her mind. He taught her so much and most of it saved her and her family's lives. But he had told her what was really in the woods. Freedom. Now she wanted to just live out there and escape everything that would remind her of everything that had happened. Maybe then her heart would heal. Somewhere along her thinking, Katniss felt the arms around her tighten.
"You might need a lumberjack to help with that." Johanna said with that familiar smirk.
"Well I do need someone to chop firewood."
"So you're thinking about a nice log cabin in the woods correct?"
"Yeah."
"I think that's a great idea." Johanna fell back onto her bed bringing Katniss with her. "A distraction from all that has happened."
"So you want to live with me?"
"Of course. I don't really have anywhere left to go. Besides you help me hold myself together."
"Thanks Jo." Katniss turned on her side and laid her head on Johanna's chest. "You keep me together too." Johanna took a deep breath and closed her eyes. She didn't need to be asleep to see her dreams because Katniss was always right there in front of her. They held each other together when apart they would break.
"I guess our broken hearts fit together perfectly."
"Yeah. We'll never fall apart again." Johanna said quietly as Katniss smiled at her.
"I love you Johanna."
"Love you too brainless."
