It's over. Well, it will never really be over but for the time being it's over. She thought this day might never come. It had been a rough year for the both of them. She'd spent many nights sitting alone, wondering if they would ever be reunited, if he would live to see her again and now here they are. They're finally together. If only William could be here with them. Then everything would be perfect. Unfortunately, their little miracle was miles away and the odds that they would ever see him again were very slim. She tried to focus on the positive but it was hard. They had lost so much and ended up with so little to show for it. She sighed deeply and Mulder wrapped his arms around her. She opened her eyes and waited as they adjusted to the dim lighting in the room. She looked intently into his eyes and the sadness was evident in her gaze. He noticed it right away.
"He's safe now," Mulder said softly.
"It's not just that" she whispered quietly, her voice barely evident.
"I know" he replied, and she knew that he really did.
He pulled her closer so that her cheek rested on his chest. She listened to the steady beat of his heart as they lay in silence. He gently kissed the top of her head. She tilted her face upward and he found himself lost in her angelic blue eyes.
"What happens now?" she asks, "where do we go from here? Do we just pick up where we left off?"
"Do you really think we can do that?" he says slowly.
She lowered her eyes and shook her head.
"I didn't think so," he said.
"We need some kind of plan," she insists.
"Ok," he relented, "here's the plan - we enjoy every peaceful moment we have together and see where life takes us."
She opened her mouth to protest but he softly placed his index finger over her lips to silence her. He leaned forward and replaced his finger with his mouth. When he pulled away he watched as she opened her eyes and a smile slowly spread across her face.
"See where life takes us?" she asked.
He nodded.
"I think I can live with that," she said confidently.
"Good!" he said.
She pressed her lips against his and settled in for a good night's sleep wrapped in the arms of the man she loves.
