"You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine,
You make me happy when skies are grey,
You'll never know dear how much I love you,
Please don't take my sunshine away" Simon sang with tears in his eyes. In his arms was a small girl. She had the darkest hair and the oddest grey skin. Her name was Marceline and she was the sunshine of his world
.
Simon's world had fallen apart because of that crown. He lost the love of his life, he watched his family and friends die, and to top it off the crown was erasing his memories. In the early stages of his change Simon found Marceline and immediately took her into his heart.
"Where are your parents?" Simon asked one day.
"I don't know where mommy and daddy are" Marceline replied, "I don't think they love me"
"I'm sure they're somewhere sunshine" the cold man patted her head, "And I'm sure that they love you" He cuddled the tiny frame.
"Even if you one day find that they don't love you, I love you" He raised her as his own.
Over the years they faced hell together. They took pictures together, they talked, and they played. By this time he had already forgotten about to war, about his past, about Betty. At least he remembered his sunshine.
One day the pair stood beneath a willow tree. The grass was soft on their bare toes. The sky was still grey from the smog and the fires could still be seen in the distance. Marceline was 14 years old now. She was happy with Simon. He took care of her as well as he could but his memory was fading. He had forgotten how they met and at times forgot her name.
"Marcy, sunshine, I need you to remember something for me" he asked out of the blue.
"Sure! What is it?" She tilted her head.
" I have a book for you but you'll have to get it from me when you're older" he smiled softly, "I am telling you this now because I know my mind doesn't have much time left"
"That's not possible! You can't forget about me!" She wrapped her arms around the older mans waist.
"Marceline I will forget everything any minute now. I need you to be strong for me. I need you to remember for me. I am glad I got to spend this time with you. Please forgive me for whatever I do, when I don't remember you" he sank to the ground as he spoke.
She just held on tighter to him as she curled up into his lap like when she was a child. Marceline was expecting this day but not so soon, she wasn't ready to lose the man she had come to see as a father.
"You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine,
You make me happy when skies are grey" Simon began to sing the same tune he did whenever she was upset.
"You'll never know dear how much I love you,
Please don't take my sunshine away" she sang with him as she cried.
"The other night dear,
When I lay sleeping,
I dreamt I held you in my arms,
But when I woke up I was mistaken.
So I hung my head and cried" they sang together knowing he was slipping away.
"You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy when skies are grey
You'll never know dear how much I love you please don't take my sunshine away" but the last note she knew he was gone. His body felt colder than ever and when she sat up he looked at her with questioning eyes.
"Who are you? And who am I?" He asked looking more confused than ever.
"I'm Marceline and you're the ice king." She spoke with a heavy cast of sorrow in her voice.
"Why are you crying?" He asked.
"Cause it took my sunshine away"…
