disclaimer: the story is mine, Kara and Karl aren't.

"Karl, I can't believe this. Your first day at school and you're fighting?!" His mother scalds him as they wait to see the principal. He knows he's in for a rough afternoon. His mother can have quite the sharp tongue when he angers her. He smiles at her through a black eye and sheepishly shrugs his shoulders.

The door to the pricipal's office opens. A woman walks out holding a little girl by the arm. Actually, it's more like dragging. " Kara, I'm getting sick and tired of coming here to get you because you can't behave. What got into you to cause you to fight those girls?"

The girl shrugs her shoulders and replies very simply and honestly " They made me mad. And, i don't like them anyway." She looks over at Karl, sees his black eye and his mother's expression of anger and frustration. She smiles and waves at the new boy.

"Let's go Kara." The tall blonde woman says as she once again yanks on the girl's arm.

"Mrs. Agathon? The principal will see you now." The woman behind the desk says.

"Let's go, Karl."

She had been looking at the boy from across the playground for most of recess, watching him. He was watching some of the boys play kickball, looking as if he wanted to play but not asking of he could join.

It was the boy she had seen in the Principal's office last week, after she had gotten in trouble for fighting with some of the girls in her class. She remembers seeing the black eye he had and also remembers the very angry look on his mother's face. She'd smiled and waved at him and he had given her a grin. Then he and his mother were called in to see Principal Anderson and her mother had taken her home. She stops there, not wanting to remember what had happened when they got there.

The little girl walks towards him, her blonde hair whipping out behind her in the breeze, not knowing what she'll say but still walking over anyway. She stands next to him, pretending to watch the game, but really looking at him out of the corner of her eye. He's still got a little bit of a shiner, but it's mostly gone. Finally turning to him, she smiles, not concerned about her missing front tooth.

"Hi. I'm Kara. I saw you in the office last week."

The boy turns and grins at her. "Yeah, I remember you. My name's Karl. Nice to meet you, Kara. "

"Karl with a C or Karl with a K?" The girl asks him.

"K. It's my dad's middle name." Karl replies.

"So why aren't you playing kickball with them?" Kara asks, indicating the other boys with a nod of her head.

"I asked, but they said they didn't let new kids play with them." Karl says a little sadly. He's not really liking this new school or the kids here. Kara is the first person who's even spoken to him in a friendly way, the rest have either ignored him or been mean.

"They're stupid anyway, you don't want to play with them." Kara says with clear disdain. "Most kids here are buttheads anyway. They're jerks to me too, except for a few. You wanna play pyramid?"

"Okay, but don't cry when I beat you." Karl says, trying his best to sound tough.

"Sure, I won't cry." Kara says while smiling. What Karl doesn't know is that no one at school has been able to beat her, not even the older kids.

By the time the bell rings signaling the end of recess, Kara has Karl beat by 6 points. 16-10. Karl stands looking at her, frustrated and maybe even a little embarrassed.

"I want to play again, I know I can beat you." He huffs out between breaths.

"Tomorrow, then?" Kara asks, smiling victoriously at him.

Karl's look changes from angry and embarrassed to something resembling respect, and smiles. "Ok. Tomorrow."

"See ya then, Karl." She waves and turns, joining her class as it lines up to go back.

"Yeah, see ya Kara." He answers quietly.
