A/N: This is a companion piece to So Close Yet So Far
Her Turn
She was on pins and needles as she followed Donnelly into the basement. What in the hell was she going to do if he got caught.
"We finally got you."
Her heart dropped... the man in a suit had been caught. Her heart leaped… the man in a suit had been caught but not her man in a suit.
The grin on her face was unabashed. The cockiness in her stance was barely hidden. The man in a suit, her man in a suit had gotten away…
"Sir there's a problem… step back."
Her heart fell, fell hard to the floor. There were four of them and one was her man in a suit.
"Well do you recognize him?"
"ah…"
She scanned the line up once then settled on him, on her man in the suit. She caught the slight nod, the message he sent her.
It's OK. Turn me in
"No" was her answered to the man in a suit.
"Cuff 'em all!"
A man was down. He was captured and behind enemy lines. Carter the solder had to move.
The mission was simple: Negotiate the facts in evidence and secure the release of the prisoner.
"Detective Carter, has our friend in Rikers been released?"
"Almost. I'm going to meet him now."
Mission accomplished… almost.
She waited anxiously for the prisoner to be released from the enemy's camp, to see her man in a suit walk to his freedom, to her…
It was irrational that she worried so, worried about his being behind bars. He was a well trained CIA agent who she knew had been in worse spots than Rikers… but still she worried.
There he is
And he was OK.
Keep walking John. You're almost to the goal line.
"Stop right there."
Unlawful combatants… threat to national security… they're not going anywhere.
"Put 'em back!"
Damn it!
Mission derailed...
What the hell was she going to do now?
Senior interrogator in Iraq... put those military skills to use… interrogate every last one of these men… who they are… what they know.
"Start with him."
She turned and looked at him. His eyes were hard. His eyes were hot. His eyes were questioning.
There are things you can't do Detective and this is one of them. I'm suppose to take the hard risks not you. What the hell have you done? If something happens to you because of this... because of me... What the hell have I done? Damn it Detective! It wasn't suppose to be like this.
For just a moment, she was taken back by the anger in his eyes but it was too late for regrets, too late to take things back. She had gone down this road and there was no looking back.
She was in a position to take the hard risk and this time he could not come to her rescue. The savior needed saving and she was his only hope.
New mission: Go behind enemy lines, get into that foxhole and bring your brother-in-arms home.
It was her turn to rescue him.
A/N: Next, I am going to try and deal with what Carter was thinking during the interrogation.
