He felt bad for what he did to the Oracle.
He didn't really blame the little girl. He was just kinda out of his mind about Maria's death. He really wanted to hurt Zeus but she was in the wrong place at the right time.
Finding out about Bianca's death was like losing Maria all over again.
She was his little girl. The only daughter he'd ever had, and she didn't even know he was her father.
He really was proud of Nico.
He was brave and good and loyal. The kid stood up to Kronos for crying out loud!
He didn't really hate Percy as much as he acted like he did.
The kid had saved Nico's life. He also put his family in their place with his request. He even managed to get his Helm of Darkness back and the sword too.
There was a time when he wanted more than anything to be human.
He could marry Maria. He could watch little Nico and Bianca grow up. Then when Maria died he wished again to be human, so he could die.
When he found out about Percy he almost broke the oath just to spite his brothers.

Bianca's cap was a gift from him too.
He dropped it in another box, the same way and the same time he did with Nico's.

Despite what he might tell others, ruling over the dead was stressful enough. Trying to control his family? Ugh. It gave him a headache just thinking about it.
