Harry searched the room for one person. Ginny. He had just defeated Voldemort, and all the Death Eaters were being rounded up. There was no sign of Ginny. Harry ran from the room, wand out, ready for any attacker. He had barely reached the doors when a still-masked Death Eater came into the room. They engaged in fierce battle immediately.
"What are you doing, scarface?" the Death Eater taunted, "Running away, are we?"
"No, actually," Harry shot back, "I just killed your master!"
The Death Eater was so shocked that he dropped his wand. Harry took advantage of his momentary distraction and Stunned the Death Eater. He ran on through the empty castle, stopping at doorways to look in on the desolation, to see if his love was there, was one of the faceless, the anonymous victims. For what seemed forever but was only an hour he ran, never stopping for more than long enough to try and find her. He saw many bodies, dead or unconscious, on the ground, in the classrooms. Each time he blinked, the images of their bodies was painted, flashed, sprawled across the backs of his eyelids in photo negative. He tried to shake the images out of his head, but he couldn't. All his fault…
Harry reached the Astronomy tower, the site of death, the death of his third replacement father figure. Where the man he had trusted had fallen, broken as waxwork on the ground far below the tower window. A symbol of Harry's out of control life. How simple it would be to end all this, this worry. But Harry knew he couldn't. He had thought about it, but there had been one thing holding him back each time, stopping him from actually doing it. Ginny, the one he needed to find now. If he lost her… There would be nothing stopping him from doing it, making that last solitary visit up to the tower window. Nothing to stop him from making the jump, wind in his hair. That was why he needed to find her soon. If he didn't, he would lose his mind. There was no sign of her in the tower. Harry had searched the entire castle. She had to be outside, then. She had to be. Where else?
Harry ran back to the Entrance Hall, past more bodies. At the entrance hall he pushed past the great oak doors into the pressing darkness.
