All characters belong to Jane Austen, as much as I wish otherwise.

Prologue

Elizabeth Bennet wanted to marry for love. She was convinced that only the deepest love could induce her into matrimony. She had not yet found any man meeting her high standards-intelligent, humble, kind, loving, witty, nor had she met a man to whom she really felt any attachment.

Her eldest sister, Jane, was, as many men called her, an "angel." She was beautiful, kind, and always looked for the good side in things. She too wished to marry for love. Now, as their family was not rich, and Longbourne, their estate, was entailed away from the female line, their wishes were not entirely realistic, but they were there all the same.

Fitzwilliam Darcy wanted to marry for love. The only problem was that many people called him proud and haughty, and he wanted to change that image of himself. He didn't think any young woman would like him if he had that reputation, even though he was extremely rich and handsome.

His dear friend, Mr. Bingley, had bought a house in the country called Netherfield, and wanted Darcy to come along with him and his family to see it. Of course, no house could ever compare to Pemberley, Darcy's estate in Derbyshire, but Darcy agreed, thinking it would be the perfect place to try out the new "him." He had no intention of marrying a country girl, but he thought it could do no harm in acting courteous and gentlemanly to them, maybe even dancing with one who particularly caught his eye.
