The Miracle

by Iglika

Zee was thoughtful tonight. He was absent even when we kissed good night.

I didn't go to my bed though. I sat beside him on the couch. He turned to look at me. His deep blue eyes were sad. So sad that I tucked my hand around his elbow and asked quietly, "What's troubling you?"

His hand gently touched mine, his sign that he was thankful that I had sensed his mood.

"How can people so easily take other humans' lives?" he said slowly. "My conscience wasn't activated when I was a destroyer. But the people who do this? They have a conscience. Every human does."

"But so many act as if they don't."

"Why?"

"The capacity for evil exists in every one of us."

"So doing evil things or having evil thoughts can't be separated from human nature?"

"I'm afraid so, yes."

Zee looked down to his hand on mine, as my wrist was lying on his elbow. Then he gently took my hand between his palms. "Life is in you, Ro. And you are so fragile. So many things in this world could easily extinguish the flame of life. But the government didn't create me to be a guardian of life."

"I'm sure Dr. Selig's plan for you was exactly that."

"I'm sure too. But the government built me to kill. They hadn't created those people, their targets. They have no right to take their lives. Neither did I".

"That's true. But what made you think about it now?"

"My memories of Dolan's family are with me always."

"But you didn't kill them."

"I was supposed to, if the secrecy of my mission was compromised. And that meant not only Dolan, but I would have had to kill even Becca and Mrs. Dolan. I never told you, Ro, but the truth is that not only Dolan's innocence activated my conscience. Looking into Becca's smiling eyes I realized that life is a miracle. I had no right to destroy that miracle, no matter the reason. No one had the right to destroy it."

I kept silent for some seconds, looking in Zee's deep sad eyes.

"No one has the right to destroy you either. You are a miracle, Zee. You really are." I kissed him. His arms tenderly surrounded me and we held each other, trying to retain this moment of our own miracle - our dedication, devotion and love.
