Phoenix leaned back and rubbed his eyes as he finished wrapping his present for Trucy. She had gone with Apollo and Athena to enjoy the mild weather in People Park. They'd begged Phoenix to come, but he'd declined, saying that they didn't want "an old man like me" tagging along. Athena had smiled and said, "You're not old, boss, you're middle-aged," before dragging Apollo and Trucy out of the door.
So, here was renowned defense attorney Phoenix Wright, covered in tape and wrapping paper. His back ached from hunching over the table for too long. And yet, he found himself drifting forward.
Maybe I'll just rest my eyes for a bit...
Suddenly, Phoenix was shocked back to full awareness by the sound of the doorbell, which sounded an awful lot like a song by the Gavinners. (He wasn't entirely sure which one of his subordinates, or his daughter, had done that, but he wasn't going to ask anytime soon.)
He groaned and rubbed his eyes again as he rose from his seat. He didn't stop rubbing until he had opened the door all the way, which provided his first surprise of the evening: Chief Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth, with a rather neatly wrapped box in hand.
"Oh! Miles, uh, what are you doing here? Come in, please."
Miles walked in slowly, looking extremely uncomfortable as he did so. Phoenix glanced at the piles of gift wrap awkwardly, feeling that he should have cleaned them up before opening the door.
"So, uh, what...What brings you by?"
"I brought...A gift."
"Oh, Miles, I wrapped your present for Trucy already. Remember? You gave it to me earlier this week."
"No...I...I brought a gift for you."
Phoenix blinked for a second before he understood what he'd heard.
"Oh, oh, me! You got me a gift? Gee, Miles...I thought we weren't going to give each other anything."
"I know, but...I saw this in the store and I thought of you." Miles thrust out the arm holding the present toward Phoenix.
Phoenix took the small box from Miles nervously. He unwrapped it and removed the top of the box. Inside was a small keychain in the shape of an artist's palette.
"Oh, Miles..."
"I seem to recall you originally majoring in art in college."
"I did...Thanks, but I...I didn't get anything for you."
"It's quite all right. I...I think your continued presence in my life is gift enough."
Phoenix suddenly wished he had mistletoe.
Ah, screw the mistletoe.
Phoenix grabbed Miles and kissed him. The keychain fell to the ground, but neither of them seemed to care.
