Caroline, Bonnie, Stefan, Klaus, Kol and Rebekah all worried about Elena and Elijah. They knew the two loved each other but they still worried about them. They had seen the two sporting injuries more than once and the amount of times Elena had left him for weeks at a time and then in turn Elijah disappeared for up to a month and no one could reach him.
They knew it wasn't healthy for the two vampires but as much as they had tried to convince them both to leave, all of them knew Elena and Elijah loved each other too much to walk away for good.
The first 5 years of their marriage was amazing, they were so in love but everything had gone down hill from there and none of them knew why, there was no apparent catalyst. That was the first time Elijah had walked away, saying that he couldn't do it anymore. That it was too hard, he came back just over 3 weeks later.
They had both apologised so many times and promised it would never happen again, but there was always a next time, and a time after that, and a time after that.
They had all tried to speak to the couple, together and separately because everyone close to them could see they were a time bomb waiting to explode but they always argued it was their lives and both of them could walk away at any time.
It had gotten complicated when the allegations of cheating came up because it included people they knew and that the couple respectively had a past with. How they had got through the last 20 years was a mystery to each of them.

So they left it, they would always be there to pick up the pieces when everything inevitably fell apart time after time but they would stop trying to intervene because nothing they said had any affect on the couple.
Because as much as it had all changed when things were going good they were still perfect for each other.
