A Pack of Cigarettes

'In Memoriam'

Disclaimer: I am not James Cameron, nor do I own any of his glorious creations.

Warnings: This story is tame, just a small bit of angst because of the rather dreary subject. The worst would be my screwing up details about Pandora and its inhabitants. I tried my best to be as accurate as possible, so if you notice that I messed anything up, I'd be thankful for you to point out the mistake. Thank you!

A thin downpour of rain—or rather, the poisonous remnants of prussic acid falling from the frothy atmosphere—rattled overhead as it struck the reinforced metal of the former Avatar linking module. Within the small space, Jake Sully loomed over Norm Spellman's shaking form. His hand rested on the man's bare shoulder, the cyan palm luminescent against the tanned skin in the dimmed light. The human's green eyes darkened beneath his respiratory mask as he gazed out of the compound's window at the dampening landscaping. "Jake, I'm sure it'll be fine. Besides, it shouldn't take long and then I'll be back indoors before too long."

"Don't be ridiculous Norm, I can smell the hydrogen cyanide in the air—"

"Really?" The anthropologist interrupted. "I wonder, is it just the Na'vi superiority in scent detection or could it be a hereditary trait in my genes? I'll have to give Patel a call and see if he can detect it for himself."

"It could also be that mask of yours. It's feeding you filtered air, so no doubt it impairs your senses."

"Regardless, it's always fruitful to know our genetics. I think I'll run a test once I get out of this compound." His voice trailed and the excitement in his eyes dimmed. The brunette scratched his bandaged side as he let out a labored sigh. "Okay, you won Jake, I won't risk it, but could you do me a favor? I know that Grace would appreciate it."

The Na'vi warrior nodded and waited patiently as his human friend scavenged the room, eventually stopping as he pulled a small duffel bag from a storage shelf. He took a quick look at he contents of the bag before zipping it closed and proceeded to throw it at the former-human. "There, inside is her last pack—"

He was interrupted by Naytiri's sudden presence at the doorway. Her golden eyes were trained on Jake's tall form. He immediately placed the bag across his shoulders after a quick glance at what it held. His eyes became clouded as he followed her out the door. "Sorry Norm, the ceremony is starting! I understand though and I'll get it done."

"Great, I just love nonverbal communication." The cyan man laughed as he ran from the room. The scientist watched the two disappear into Pandora's dense rainforest. He placed a hand against the window, wishing nothing more than to be accompanying the Na'vi.

"Thank you Jake." His whisper echoed softly throughout the metal room.

Addition Notes: The next part will be up as soon as I have time to upload it. I just have to research a bit on the 'funeral' rituals of the Na'vi to polish the second part. I hope you enjoyed this small part and all reviews are very much appreciated. This is just my attempt to wrap my head around Pandora and the world of Avatar. I hope it was at least partly successful.
