Butterflies

Butterflies are pretty, Tenten remembers one lazy afternoon. It is a random thought, recalled as she pants under the shade of their tree after a sparring session with the team.

Lee caught her one, when they were so much younger and so much more innocent.

(She doubts they'll ever be that innocent again, with the blood on their hands and deaths associated to their faces.)

It was a quivering, shaken thing with crumpled wings. She likes it immediately, pure and fluttering as it was. And when the insect flies away, trembling as it goes, Tenten wants to imagine herself as a pretty butterfly in the wind.

(But she isn't pretty or defenseless. In reality, Tenten knows she is a moth. She'll simply die chasing her light and protecting her home.)

She was never ohso pretty

like a butterfly.

Ino was a butterfly, Sakura was a butterfly, Hinata was a butterfly, but why can't Tenten be one too?

(It's because they're all beautiful and graceful. She envies Sakura's exoticness, Ino's flare, and Hinata's serenity. What does she have, really?)

Her brain stops thinking when Neji nudges her with his elbow. A cool

stare equals he's done waiting, it's time to continue. Resting is for the weak.

Nod and smile, nod and smile. She pulls out her scrolls and

weapons.

Tenten will be a butterfly with knives.

(and stronger than yesterday)
