Rumour Has It…

With hindsight they really should have expected something like this.

Ever since the Stargate project had been made public there had been rumours. Rumours that could be worrying even with the removal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell.

Especially if either man ever wanted a date again.

Something must have happened recently though. He knew they got to see most things that were to be printed in advance even if they didn't get the opportunity to change them and finally something had been disturbing enough for General O'Neill and Doctor Jackson to request making a public statement through the White house.

And, since the men in question were who they were, when they shouted everyone came running.

Even if 'everyone' happened to be the President of the United States.

Which was why he was hurrying down a corridor anxiously, even as he desperately tried to look as though he wasn't.

He had an idea about what these rumours could be. He could even see where the press were coming from. SG teams were close, they had no choice… Similar rumours were probably long overdue about Colonel Sheppard and Doctor McKay, the two men had enjoyed some leniency due to their place in the Pegasus galaxy but it was inevitable in the end.

But they had both been married. The only reason Jackson had joined the program had been to find his wife. There were reports of incidences with women offworld. Jackson had even left for a year, the fact that he'd been dead and it probably wasn't his fault was irrelevant.

And hadn't there been whisperings about Carter and O'Neill?

Rounding the doorway the two men sprung to their feet and he waved them back down.

"Gentlemen." He spread his hands. "How can I help you?"

"These rumours," Jackson started, "we need to put a stop to them. They could be extremely damaging to the way the world views the SGC and, quite frankly, all of SG1 finds them more than a little disturbing."

The President nodded sympathetically.

Jackson spread his hands and then steepled his fingers as he began delicately. "The press are planning to imply that Jack and I have a friendship that is merely a cover for a deep-seated hatred and mistrust of each other. That I resent Jack for his failure to find Sha're and that Jack's… morally unethical was I think the term they used, relationship with Sam destroyed our team. There are even implications that SG1 broke up many years ago and has simply been brought back together for the cameras."

"They paired me with Carter for crying out loud," O'Neill protested loudly. "They think I want a six foot six, angry as hell Jaffa after my blood?"

Only years of experience in politics allowed his face to show no signs of shock at Jackson's next words.

"Bottom line is, Jack and I were married on the Jaffa world Chulak several years ago and then had it authenticated on Abydos shortly after. Since it's pretty much legal in the rest of the galaxy we'd like it made official on the planet we actually live on." He shot a smile at O'Neill whose eyes softened. "If nothing else it should shut the press up…"
