Grey

He watches her like a piece of glass. Any minute now she can break. They've been through everything: a stalker, a murder case, a car accident, but nothing like this. In the end, he always thought they would pull through it all. As long as they were together, but then he starts to wonder if being together can only cause her pain.

Oh look at how she listens

She says nothing of what she thinks

She just goes stumbling through her memories

He listens to her talk in her sleep. Her soft whispers tell him a story of a beautiful baby girl. He pictures a newborn with soft white skin and sleepy blue eyes. He knows that he was not with her or his daughter on that boat or during the storm, but at least, he can be with them in her dreams.

There's an emptiness inside her

And she'd do anything to fill it in

But all the colors mix together - to grey

And it breaks her heart

He allows her to go on in life as if nothing as happened. She shops; she visits Sonny and Carly and Mike; she comes home and sleeps in his arms. She tells him how excited she is about her new nephew. She smiles at him, but he knows that underneath it all, she is falling apart.

How she wishes it was different

She prays to God most every night

And though she swears it doesn't listen

There's still a hope in her it might

Some nights she stares out the window. He gazes at her from a distance, careful not to disturb her as she thinks. Her hands move to her stomach as if she's still trying to connect. He comes up from behind and lays a hand on her shoulder. She grabs it with a squeeze, yet her eyes never turn to him.

And though it's red blood bleeding from her now

It feels like cold blue ice in her heart

She doesn't want to talk about it anymore. Maybe to show him that she's moved on, ready to start over and have another chance at a family, but when she sleeps, she still speaks of their daughter. He listens because that is all he can do. Something he should have done in the beginning before he left her and her secret. In the morning, she has no memory of her dreams, but he remembers. He remembers it all.

There's a stranger speaks outside her door

Says take what you can from your dreams

Make them as real as anything

It'd take the work out of the courage

Carly asks him if she's okay. He nods, even though he is unsure. Carly is sympathetic, but she knows he does want pity so she does not pressure him into talking. That night, he asks her himself and she nods, even though he is still unsure. Later, he dreams of a tiny baby crying and he wakes up to find her crying next to him.

She feels like kicking out all the windows

And setting fire to this life

She could change everything about her using colors bold and bright

But all the colors mix together - to grey

They make love slowly as if that is what can bring back their daughter. They want to believe that if it was their love that created her, it is love that can bring her back. She wraps herself in the blanket that Carly had given to her and buries her face in it. He finds her asleep on the couch with the baby blanket around her. He sits and touches her hair. He lets her dream because only then can she be with their child and only then can she truly smile.
