The screeching stopped after what seemed like hours. Everyone recovered fairly quickly, although still a bit shaken. Laura still lay with her head in Carmilla's lap. One of her ears had a slight buzzing sound in it, she could hear nothing out of her left ear, both ears hurt and she had a massive headache.
Carmilla's gentle hand stroked her head, while her other arm wrapped around her back. Laura didn't move. She could barely hear what was going on around her. She focused on Carmilla's comforting grasp and tried her best to ignore the pain in her head. A fluid slowly leaking from her ears, Carmilla smelled it before Laura felt it.
The scent made Mattie freeze. "Leave us." She said at the group of now silent college students, a snarl pushing her lips up slightly, "Now!"
Danny, Kursh, and their cohorts turned tail and walked as quickly as they could out. Danny hesitated at the door and looked back at Laura before a glare from Mattie sent her out. Perry and LaFontaine didn't move. LaF noticed Laura first. She took a step towards the human and vampire when Mattie snarled.
"Everyone. Out." She said.
"No." LaF growled, "You may be a vampire and Carmilla's sister, but I'm not scared of you."
"LaFontaine." Carmilla's voice was soft yet direct. She shook her head and nodded to the door. They didn't challenge the vampire. They gave her a nod and lead Perry out the door.
"Laura?" Carmilla said, pulling the frail human up, "You okay?"
Laura sat up, "I'm fine."
Carmilla put a gentle hand on Laura's cheek. She slid her thumb down across the human's ear, wiping some of the blood away from her ear. "No you're not, Cupcake." She said, showing Laura her bloody thumb before she flashed a glare at Mattie. "Out." She said with a snarl at the vampire.
"Carmilla-"
She didn't say a word. Instead, she pulled Laura closer to her and narrowed her eyes at Mattie.
"We'll discuss this later." Mattie said as she left.
"Carm, I'm fine."
Carmilla rested her forehead against Laura's, "Do you're ears hurt?
She nodded, "I can't hear out of my left ear and there's a static noise in my right, but I can still hear."
"Lay down, I'll get you something for the pain."
"I'm fine."
"You're ears are bleeding, you are not fine."
Carmilla was back within a few seconds with a glass of water, a small pill, and a washcloth. Laura took the pill and drank the water while Carmilla wiped the blood from her ears. For a vampire, her motions were slow and delicate, almost overly gentle.
"You're ear drum is ruptured." Carmilla said as she sat on the chair next to her girlfriend.
"This isn't the first time she's done something like that."
"No. Some people are more sensitive to her shriek than others." She tossed the cloth on the floor, "It'll take a few months to heal."
Laura nodded and laid her head on the vampire's collarbone as she put her arm over Laura's shoulders. Carmilla laid her head against Laura's head. The human threaded her fingers between the vampire's fingers and heaved a sigh.
"I'm sorry." Carmilla said, kissing the top of Laura's head.
"Don't be. It wasn't your fault."
Carmilla laid her forehead against the top of Laura's head. Her fingers gently stroking the human's shoulder and arm.
"I'll be okay." Laura said. She rolled over on top of Carmilla and slid her head under the vampire's chin. Carmilla wrapped her arms around her, nuzzling into her girlfriend's dirty blonde hair.
