The air is heavy and moist. The moon is only a sliver of light, high in the sky. Down the village main street two people stroll with their arms linked together. The man has a tall grey hat and the woman wears a big dress with a corset None of the villagers notice them. For tonight, the veil is thin.
Dew covers the ground and the moon has sunk in the sky. In the graveyard, children run about as parents place flowers on the graves of loved ones. The long lost loved ones in turn tuck flowers in the hair of the visitors, but none notice until they arrive home. For tonight, the veil is thin.
As the moon hovers just above the horizon, teenagers jump out from behind bushes to scare passing friends and siblings. None of them admit that they see faces in the bushes out of the corner of their eye, watching them. Noticed only in the peripheral, other children with shining daggers hide in the bushes with them. For tonight, the veil is thin.
The moon seems to float on the ocean as the tall ships sail across the flat water. The strong wind carries the sound of song and dance between the ships. Many songs in many tongues are sung in raucous harmony. There are dancers on the boats and dancers on the water, but neither notices the other. For tonight, the veil is thin.
The light of the moon is gone and the sky is littered with wisps of clouds blocking the little light from the stars. College students sneak into abandoned houses and have a drink. They are too drunk to notice the new party guests with britches and pistols. Nonetheless the beer is passed to all and laughs echo in the empty halls. For tonight, the veil is thin.
But someone notices. A girl by the name of Rose. She knows the veil is thin tonight. But she is not scared, she is waiting. Alone in the forest behind her house, Rose waits with one single candle light to guide her spirit back. A face materialises from the darkness. A handsome man in a pinstripe suit walks toward her. He holds out his hand and whispers her name. She slowly stands and reaches her hand out in response. As their hands clasp there is a swirl of wind and only the candle is left, smoke rising from the wick.
They wander through the ages, fingers laced and stepping in harmony. They say nothing, only gaze at the wonders they pass. Their love is apparent for all the world to see, yet no one notices the couple.
They settle down atop a hill overlooking the sea. There is no one for miles. There they lay in each other's arms, gazing at the stars that dot the heavens.
The man asks the girl how long she plans on staying with him. She answers, "Forever" and stabs herself in the heart. The man grasps her hand and the two spirits walk off into the night, leaving the body behind.
