Author's note: Here's the prologue to my new Host story. I know it starts out similar to the book but I really didn't mean for that to happen. I enjoyed writing it and will have more as soon as I can. Anyways please R&R.
Disclaimer:If I owned The Host I wouldn't be posting it on .
Prologue
Another insertion
Fords Deep Water sighed heavily with irritation. It wasn't because he was inserting another soul no that was his calling, his job; it was because he was inserting a soul into the body of a wild adult…again. Haven't they all learned that adults have a higher chance of coming back and corrupting the soul? Or caused the soul to commit suicide which was always a testy subject to even think about.
Darren was doing his job getting everything set; to him this was only a job, there was no emotion. He quickly set the needed tools up and smiled at Fords, "Everything is ready, Fords."
"Thanks. I'm not sure if this is the best idea…" Fords said, but nonetheless stood in his spot and grabbed the scalpel. Darren was ready by the cryotank. "Begin Darren." The button was pressed and Fords slipped the scalpel easily through the skin of the neck and then sprayed on the medication that stilled the excess flow of blood. The he continued to open the fissure wider, carefully avoiding the muscles at the back of the girl's neck.
"The soul is ready," Darren said.
"As am I. Bring her here," Fords said. This was the only thing he looked forward to…the best part of the insertion, being able to see the soul. It's gracefulness as it entered the body and connected itself to the host. Darren was there now at his elbow waiting for the next command. "Send her home." He said and though the soul couldn't hear him he whispered to it, "Good luck…"
He watched in awe as the soul stretched herself to connect to the optical nerves and to the ear canals. The rest connected to the other nerves as she accustomed herself to her new home. Once she was finished Fords cleaned and healed the wound; and applied the salve that sealed the incision and brushed on the scar-softening powder. "There perfect."
Darren patted the healer on the back, "She'll be ok." He knew the worry his colleague had for the soul.
Fords nodded and began sanitizing the tools. "But if her Seeker is anything like the one Wanderer had then that could be a problem." He sighed and scrubbed his hands.
"I guess time will tell." Darren wasn't as concerned. He felt that once a soul was inserted and left the hospital they were no longer his concern, but he worried for Fords.
"Yes time will tell," The older man looked at the girl one more time, before leaving to check on others. He told himself that if he didn't like the Seeker he would work with the soul himself.
End Note: Thanks for reading!
