John Carter walked into County General Hospital, his girlfriend Abby
Lockhart was at the admits desk, working on a chart.
"Hey beautiful." He said walking up to her.
She looked up at him and gave him a smile, "What are you doing here?
Today's your day off, do you want to get sucked up in a trauma."
He chuckled, "No, I'm here for a reason. Come with me."
She hopped off her chair and followed him, when he stopped to talk to
Susan she became worried.
"Is Exam 4 ready?" Carter asked Susan.
She gave a nervous smile and nodded. "Yeah, I just came from there,
it's all set."
"Thank you."
She nodded again and squeezed Abby's arm as she passed them. When
they entered Exam 4, Abby was suddenly confused. There were many syringes
lying on a tray. She turned around and saw Carter closing the blinds and
then taking off his shirt and pants.
"John?" She said, "What's going on?"
He sat down on a gurney and looked up at her.
She gave a nervous laugh and walked to him resting her hands on his
thighs, "As much as I would like to recreate our first time, I think there
is something else going on. Am I right?"
"Abby." He whispered, "I'm going to Africa."
She sucked in her breath.
"For two weeks."
She looked down at the ground. "And you need these vaccinations
before you go. That's why you're here today."
"Yeah." He whispered. He lifted her chin to make her look at him and
her eyes were starting to fill with tears.
"You do know that that's where the whole Smallpox/Monkey pox fiasco
came from right?" Abby mentioned.
He nodded and kissed her forehead. "It's just for two weeks."
"When are you leaving?"
"In a week."
She leaned in and kissed him, "Promise me you'll come home to me."
He squeezed her hands, "I love you Abigail."
"Don't call me that."
"Tough, I love you and I promise you I'll come home in two weeks, 14
days, no later. I swear."
Tears were falling down her face, "I love you John." She whispered
wrapping her arms around him in an embrace.
"Hey beautiful.there is nothing to worry about. I'm not going to come
back with a global killing disease, that's what all these needles are for.
Can you do it?"
She nodded, kissed him softly and began the procedure.
