When he felt for her heat, it was cold. He hoisted himself out of bed, and threw on his clothes. He opened the doors of his cabin tentatively, peeking out to see if she was there. In fact she was bent over the side, emptying her stomach into the sea. He approached her from behind and oddly found no resistance. He gently pulled her dark hair back away from her dark face, and rubbed her back with his other hand.
"You feeling ok, Love?"
Her only response was the continuation of her previous activity.
"Ana, maybe we should get you to a doctor…"
"No!" she managed to cough.
"Ana, children aren't meant to be born on the high seas."
"Wha…" she sputtered, stumbling into Jack's steady arms. "You know?"
"I'm not dense."
"I never…"
"It's alright, Love," he said, taking her down to the deck with him. Her small frame nestled in his arms.
"How can you tell?"
"You missed your rag, first off. Second, you've been puking for a week, so it's not food poisoning. That'd be outta your system by now. And last," he said, gently placing his hand on her abdomen, "that's the surest sign of a babe."
"How did this happen?"
"We've been sleeping together for a while now. It was bound to happen."
"What are we going to do?"
"Same thing everyone else does. Ship you off to the shore, I'll sail, bring in the money. Be home when I can…"
"Oh no you don't! First you stole my boat, then when we saved you, I gave this one back to you, without as much as thanks and now this…"
"Thank you, Ana," he said, kissing the top of her head. "I wouldn't be alive without you… I wouldn't be happy."
"Oh, you're lying. You love this ship more than you love me!"
"That's not true. Maybe… at one time I did; but not anymore, Anamaria, not anymore."
"Oh, no…" She scrambled to get up, but Jack hoisted her up and over the side. She resumed the unpleasant task.
"Is everything ok down there?" Gibbs asked from the helm.
"Everything is fine, Josh. Bring us about and set a course for Tortuga, though, will you?"
"Aye, Aye, Captain."
Anamaria stood up carefully, holding on to the side of the ship. "You won't find a decent doctor in Tortuga, Jack. You know that."
"I thought you didn't want a doctor…"
"Whether I want one and whether I need one are two different things."
"Aye," Jack said, hugging her close.
Constructive criticism is highly encouraged.
