Prologue
504 hours
Why is it that every time you see someone you automatically react? Whether it be a flush of the cheeks, a nod of the head or even a whispered hello. Have you ever thought that maybe you weren't in control? That maybe someone else was pulling your strings and you were just the dancing dolls in their little show?
Well if you have, you are absolutely right. And who are these people pulling the strings you may ask? Those people are us. We prefer to keep our name a secret, because if you knew who we were, everything would be ruined.
Names don't really matter because you will never see us. I guess that's kind of the point. When you give someone a name you define who they are. There is always power in a name. My father tells me to remember this if I remember nothing else. That is why when we create you, a name is given to you in particular.
We spend our whole lives controlling yours. You are our avatars, playthings if you will. You do our bidding. If you haven't figured it out by now, I'll just tell you. You don't control anything. Not your clothes, your career, not even your thoughts.
I am different than the others. I refuse to partake in their little games. We usually have created at least one of you by the age of 13. We play with you for a while and if we like you we keep you. If not, well you know what happens. If we haven't created an avatar by the age of sixteen we are considered ungrateful and become one of you. This rarely happens because everyone can't wait to participate in the game, to build their own life. That is, everyone but me.
I am fifteen and almost out of time. My sixteenth birthday is in exactly 504 hours, and I have never created an avatar. I absolutely refuse. This may seem harsh, but I despise your kind. Not out of disgust or dislike. Only out of envy. It is unfair that your life is a blueprint. Laid out on the table of life waiting to be built, while I myself am forced to not only draw out my future, but yours as well.
I guess that by now your wondering who I am. You'll find out soon enough.
