The Little Mermaid: Avatar Style
Chapter 1: Fathoms below
It was a bright sunny day as the fire nation ship The Jasmine Dragon set sail out into the vast ocean. On board, a crew of fire nation soliders were working hard swabbing the decks and singing songs of the seas.
I'll tell you a tale of the bottomless blue
And it's hey to the starboard, heave ho!
Brave sailor beware, 'cause a big 'uns a-brewin'
In mysterious fathoms below!
Heave ho!
And among these men stood the captain of the ship. A prince as a matter of fact. Zuko, son of the Fire Lord, jumped onto riggings of the ship and reached out his hand toward the sea as waves crashed against the hull, spewing sea water up into the air.
"Isn't this great Uncle? Out on the open sea, surrounded by nothing but water!" Zuko exclaimed as another wave slapped against the ship.
He turned to look back at his Uncle Iroh, who had turned 5 different shades of green since they set sail. "Oh yes...positively...delightful-" Iroh moaned as he raced toward the ledge to empty the contents of his stomach. Zuko turned his view back out to the ocean and ran his fingers back through his unruly jet black hair as yet another wave blew sea salt onto his face.
"The salt on your skin, and the wind in your hair, and the waves as ebb and they flow!
We're miles from shore and guess what? I Don't Care!" Zuko yelled.
"As for me...I'm about to heave ho!" Iroh moaned as he yakked over the side again.
Zuko couldn't help but smile. It had been too long since he set sail out on the beautiful blue sea. When his father had fallen ill, all the royal and political affairs fell on him and had kept him cooped up at the palace for months. Now with his father dead and his next birthday approaching, the pressure had become immense for Zuko to take on a bride and inherit the throne.
As his uncle and advisor, Iroh had suggested a quick boat outing to help Zuko relax and clear his head. Unfortunately, it had been a long while since Iroh himself had sailed and the rocky waves weren't agreeing with him.
We'll sing you a tale of the king of the sea and its hey to the starboard heave ho!
The ruler of all of the oceans is he in mysterious fathoms' below!
Fathoms below! Below! Hakoda is he and his water tribe sing in mysterious fathoms' below!
"Water tribe indeed. Nothing but a superstition! An old fish tale. The Water Tribe hasn't been seen or heard of in nearly a hundred years. They've disappeared, along with half the Earth kingdom." Iroh exclaimed as he stood up and wiped his beard of debris.
"I'm sorry to disagree with you General Iroh" said one of the soliders "but the tale of Chief Hakoka and his water tribe is indeed true! I know a man who saw a water bender with his own eyes! It even tried to bring him down below the waves!"
Iroh looked at the man skeptically "If the man you're referring to is your cousin Feng, I should remind you that he always was one to go heavy on the drink." Iroh then took out a handkerchief and held it to his mouth as he felt more rough waves hit the ship.
"I'm telling ya all it's the truth! The king of the ocean gets angry. And when he gets angry, beware! I'm telling ya lad when Hakoda is mad, how the waves will buck, rock to and fro! Hold on, good luck, as down you go!"
"Enough!" Iroh yelled before falling over and steadying himself on the ledge.
Zuko chuckled at his uncle but stopped suddenly when he heard something. "What is that?"
Ah ah ah...ah ah ah...ah ah ah ah ah ah...
It was a voice. And it was singing a sweet melody that was almost hypnotic and seemed to carried among the waves. Needless to say, Zuko was entranced. "It's beautiful…Do you all hear that?" Zuko asked as the crew looked around in bewilderment.
Ignoring the singing, Iroh stood up and walked toward his nephew "Prince Zuko this outing has gone on long enough. You must get back to court. Your fathers' advisors will want to speak with you about taking up his crown."
Zuko shook his head "I told you, that's not the life for me Uncle! You think I'm really wall myself back up in the palace, especially after all my father put me through these last few years? His crown can rot at the bottom of the sea for all I care!"
"Zuko please. I'm begging you-" but Iroh was cut off as the singing voice came back, stronger than before.
"There it is again! Uncle don't you understand? This is where I belong. Out on the open sea where I'm free to choose my own destiny! And right now, that destiny is calling out to me..." Zuko listened as the voice continued its sweet melody.
"With all due respect sire, the general is right. We really should be heading back to shore." said the helmsman.
"Indeed we should!" said Iroh.
Zuko however had his own plans "No. Not while I'm captain of this ship! Now hoist the sails! Helmsman, follow that voice. To the ends of the earth if we have to!"
"Aye captain. Alright everyone! Back to work!" shouted the helmsman as he steered the ship forward toward the voice. Iroh sighed disappointedly as he grabbed the ledge and commenced spewing over the side.
There's benders out there in the bottomless blue
And it's hey to the starboard, heave ho!
Watch out for 'em lad, or you'll go to your ruin
In mysterious fathoms below!
Zuko ran to the bow of the ship, took out his telescope and strained his ears for the sound of the voice. He wasn't sure why, but he was positive that once he found the source of the voice, he'd find the meaning of his true destiny...
