JAY 297 comes from the Outer Colony World of Chi Ceti IV where she was found lost and abandoned as a child. She was quickly put through rigorous tests and forced into the Spartan program. From early on in her training she shown outstanding physical and mental abilties that surpassed almost all of the other candidates. She was quickly ushered into what would later be known as a Spartan Black Ops unit. A small special task force assigned to secret,
deep cover ops using the most advanced ONI technology.
Her first mission was on the world of Tau Serpantis where her squad were ill-prepared for the boiling conditions that faced them once they landed. One of her squadmates drowned after crashing into a lake almost as soon as they hit the ground in their SOEIV 'Drop Pods'.
After numerous encounters with the Kig Yar and Unggoy patrols, the Spartan team eventually found what they were looking for. Capturing one of the Sangheili's most spiritual leaders and stealing a Covenant Phantom, the Spartan team met up with UNSC Prowler class ship Razor's Edge before leaving the system. Unfortunatly the Sangheili leader died due to fire sustained during the ship's escape to Slipspace. This mission was classed as a critical failure and the team, disbanded.
Almost two weeks later Jay was sent to the northen most part of the Eposz Ice Shelf on Reach to meet with an unidentified high-teir ONI officer. After this strange meeting was sent on a classified mission with a small squad of ODST's belonging to the Twenty Second Tactical Unit.
After rendezvous with the squad, the small team was sent to assassinate a Covenant Prophet who was visting a Forerunner site that was secured by the Covenant only a few weeks earlier. They managed to reach the overwatch position without a problem but as 297 was lining up the shot, the squad was ambushed by a Jackal and an Elite patrol. Intense fighting left only her and one ODST, JAMES , alive and the chance to kill the prophet ruined. As they raced back to their exfiltration point, a pair of Banshee's came out of nowhere and bombed the mongoose. JAY survived but was left holding the dying JAMES in her arms. She managed to reach the cover of a forest with the ODST and eventually make it off of the planet but he would later die in the medical bay after talking with 297 for three hours. 297 was hugely affected by this loss and would then go on to wear an ODST helmet and shoulder as a mark of respect for the ODST's. She also has not been reported to wear any colour except black or speak since the tragic incident.
She was eventually re-assigned to a small team of Spartans, who's existence was hidden to all. They answered to one high-teir ONI officer and had their own select equipment and vehicles. She was upgraded with Mjolnir Mark V. Armour during this time due to her SPI Armour being melted by the Banshee Fuel Rod Guns. Not even their own brothers or sisters would come to recognise them or know what had become of them. There she met BENJAMIN-272, a Spartan III she would develop a strong friendship with, amongst other Spartans. Some of which she trained with when she was becoming a Spartan. She has recently disappeared from service after being sent on an unknown assignment with her team.
