Checkmate
"So, if you get the king to capture the other king you win the game?" Clementine asked Sarah as the both sat down at the kitchen table, Sarah setting up the board. "Yep! Dad says the king is the weakest piece though while the queen is the strongest." Clementine stared as Sarah put the pieces on the board. "Why can't the queen just capture the king then why does the other king have to day?" Sarah shrugged. "I'm not sure it's just how it works." Clementine sighed and looked at her pieces "Who goes first?" she asked, looking up at Sarah. "I go first since I have the white pieces." she told Clementine. This continued for a while, both of them talking about things but Clementine made sure not to bring up the harsh reality of the outside world to her, like Carlos had told her not too.
By the time they had finished the game, Sarah winning since Clementine didn't know anything about chess, it was time for dinner, which once again consisted of beans and a cracker. Clementine sat at the table and began eating, keeping quiet as everyone talked. They talked of pointless things, anything to get their minds off Carver, Clementine thought as she finished the bowl of beans and the cracker. She got up slowly, pushing in the chair and putting the bowl in the sink so it wouldn't be in the way. She then slowly went into the living room and sat down on the couch where she slept at night. She picked up her king from the chessboard, slowly turning it around in her palm. "Lee would have liked this game." she murmured to herself, gently placing the king in the center of the board only to have it fall down. She sighed and placed her hand on her cheek, propping up her arm on her knee. "I miss you Lee." she whispered, watching the chess piece fall down off the table and onto the ground. Before Clementine knew it, tears were running down her cheeks. She put her face in a pillow and began sobbing. 'I miss you Lee so much.' she kept thinking over and over again as she cried for the first time in two years. The black king chess piece now broken in half on the floor.
