Should

By Shai

By all rights, she should hate her.

Her Sasuke had betrayed her because of the pink-haired medic, ordered her to kill her. Instead Sakura had almost killed Sasuke, her Sasuke.

What had stopped the girl, centimeters from finishing it, Karin would never know.

She should take joy in Sasuke's retaliation. She should be angry that the jinchuuriki had stopped him.

She should have fought harder against her capture.

She should have done so many things.

Instead she remembered the heart-broken sobs of the woman who should have taken her life as she saved it. She remembered that hesitation. She remembered the warmth of green chakra as it put her body back together.

She remembered the gentle touch of follow-up visits, which the medic should have left to subordinates.

She remembered the almost kind and painless interrogation by the Konoha ninja. Orochimaru-sama preferred screams and blood.

So many shoulds that weren't. So much changed because no one behaved as Karin thought they "should."

She let out a heavy breath.

The woman behind her stirred sleepily. "What's wrong? That sounded serious." The arm over Karin's ribs tightened comfortingly.

Karin twined her fingers with Sakura's. "Serious, yes. Wrong?" She snuggled closer to her lover. "Just the idea of what should have been." She turned, kissed the crease between Sakura's eyebrows. "I think I much prefer did to should."
