Prologue
Fire—walls of flame everywhere—his face even more distorted with anguish—a veil of smoke blinding the way—trapped—free —help. HELP!
Christine woke up with a gasp. Her mind whirled as she sat up on the bed, wiping away the beads of sweat from her forehead. Where was she? How did she get there? One minute she was leaving HIS lair, resting her head on Raoul's shoulder, the next—she was waking up in a bed that was not hers. The silvery moonlight shone down from the large French doors leading to the balcony, and the four posts of the bed seemed to loom over her in the darkness like the monsters in her father's tales, poised and waiting to swallow her up.
In a flash, everything came back to her—running away from the burning theatre, losing Raoul through the flames, tripping and the agonizing pain from her head to her side, and losing consciousness…
Raoul! Had he escaped? Did he come back for her? Millions of questions ran through her mind, but no answers. In her dazed state, Christine felt her eyelids slowly drooped, and decided to ask for her fiancée first thing in the morning as she fell back to a frightening, tormented sleep…
