"When the ice is over"
Before it happens
you look down upon them
The thin line between you
so fragile
yet
it managed to live through it all
you kept it up all this time.
Before it happened
Everything looked different
The earth and the people were cold
All the things that seemed so distant
you simply chose to ignore
They couldn't get close to you
You couldn't allow it
Such a thing
Should never occur.
Yet
They managed to see through
that barrier that withstood all else,
broke down all of that façade
And you let it fall in silence.
Then it happened.
These eyes saw you,
And recognized you without the ice
And they didn't let you slip away
They came close
Closer than anything or anyone
They reached out to you
Leaned ever closer and took your hand
You couldn't bring yourself to run
Even if this was the last thing you would expect
From her.
That's how it happened.
Now all there's need to know
A simple question
Hard all the same
Your life was a struggle to keep up that line
After you crossed it
After it happened
You can't avert your gaze
Fixated on them
you think to yourself
"What happens now?"
Thing is, you were never prepared
for this to ever happen
so you cannot but wonder
"When the ice is over,
where do I stand?"
Still holding her hands you look even deeper
Into them
Into her.
No treachery lies there, only love
So engulfed in this moment of perfect happiness
Not taking heed of the wind growing stronger yet
Then you turn your eyes
for a mere second, even less
and you notice
The ground is suddenly rushing towards you
Towards them!
Towards her!
She's still smiling
But a single tear creeps its way off her face
taken by the wind.
She has already seen.
She knows.
Yet
Neither does she let go off your hands
Nor does she call for help
She's given it all up.
(for you. Just like that.)
And though you've got nowhere to stand
Thinking clearer than ever
You pull her close
Into what seems like a never ending embrace
And you give it all up.
(for her. Just like that.)
