"Why?" he whispered into the dark.
She struggled to turn on her side, attempting to face him. "I thought you were asleep." Reaching out, she trailed her fingers down his jaw.
"Why did you save me?" he asked bluntly, his voice coming out much harder than he intended. He looked into her soft eyes searching for an answer.
"What are you talking about, love?" Her fingers moved to play with his hair, smiling as he relaxed slightly, kissing her wrist.
"You-you fought for me. No one else has ever done that. People fought with me for many different reasons, but you fought for me." He reached out to trace her growing stomach. "Even before, Sirius and James, they thought – well they even had their doubts about me and their own set of worries at the time. I know after I left you some began to doubt me again, but not you, no matter what you were always there. You saved me from giving up, from losing everything I-we have now. Why?"
She smiled, her eyes glistening. "I love you," she whispered. "Sometimes life's not easy. Why would I give up on something I knew deep down you wanted? It just took you a very long time to let go and realize it. Sometimes you need to fight for love. My mum, she fought for my dad. Sirius fought for Harry. Even my aunt, she maybe crazy, but she fights like hell. It must run in the family."
He smiled before turning somber once again. "But Andromeda lost Ted, Harry lost Sirius, and if I have anything to say about it Bellatrix certainly isn't going to have a happy ending. Is it worth it in the end? The fighting? I hurt you so badly..." His voice trailing off as he rolled onto his back, bring an arm up to cover his face.
"Remus… Remus, look at me." She reached up grabbing his hand, bringing it to rest on her oversized belly. "This is what the fighting was for. He is worth every tear and every lonely sleepless night. He is worth all the prejudices we may face. Just remember that. He is worth it. He'll have a happy ending because of us. I promise."
Remus turned his head to the side, meeting her eyes and with a small grin. "I thought I told you she is a she."
Tonks rolled her eyes, returning the smile. "It's your son, Remus. Trust me."
He sighed. "We'll see, you're going to owe me a lot of chocolate." She giggled as he shifted over her brushing a stray piece of hair away from her face. "Thank you," he whispered, leaning down to met her lips.
