Hermione waited under the weeping willow near the lake, her frizzy brown hair blowing behind her in the wind. She gathered her robes more closely around her as she looked out across the smooth, black lake, stars reflecting in the water. It was chilly, especially for a night in early June.
"Come on, where are you?" she murmured to herself. "We only have a few hours, anyway, and you're late."
As if in answer to her thoughts, she heard soft footfalls on the grass behind her. She turned, smiling, to see the person she had been waiting for for the past ten minutes.
"I was beginning to think you weren't going to come."
Draco pulled her into his arms. "Would I ever pass up any time I could possibly spend with you? Especially since we have so little anyway..."
At that, Hermione frowned. "Draco, how long do you think we'll be able to keep this up? We can't tell anyone, but at the same time, we can't keep this from everyone forever. Someone is bound to find out eventually."
"We just can't let that happen, can we? We'll be careful."
"But..." Hermione sighed. "I love you, Draco. I love you more than you or anyone else could ever know. And I want everyone to know. I'm not ashamed. But if people found out..."
Draco nodded. He knew. "Word would get around. Once it got to my father." He shuddered at the thought. "He would stop at nothing to keep us apart. He'd be bent on getting rid of you, and then he'd probably arrange for me to marry someone like... someone like Pansy Parkinson."
Hermione pressed herself against Draco, and he unfastened his cloak to put it around her so it covered them both. "No. No, they can't take you away from me. I won't let them," she whispered.
"How can we stop them? I would die trying to protect you from my father, or You-Know-Who, or anything and anyone...but then who would keep you safe from them?"
Hermione looked suddenly up at him, eyes shining with excitement. "We'll run away."
"What?"
"You heard me. Graduation is in two weeks. That night...forget the parties, forget the feast. We can bewitch our trunks for easy traveling...take our broomsticks to the closest place we can catch the Knight Bus...and go as far we can by that. I know Muggle travel, I know the Muggle world; I can get us anywhere. We'll get as far away as possible and leave them all behind."
"You're crazy."
"Maybe, but I'll do anything to be able to be with you."
"It won't work, they'll find us."
"It will, and they won't. Draco, I want to be with you. Do you want to be with me, too?"
"Yes. Of course I do, you know I do."
"Then let's do this. You said you would die to protect me. Why not live with me and be safe? We can go someplace completely distant. America, Japan, Canada, Africa, I don't care where! As long as I'm with you, I don't care about anything else."
Draco stared down into Hermione's intense, determined, brown eyes for a moment, and then smiled. "Alright," he said. "Alright. Right after graduation...we pack and we leave." He leaned down and kissed Hermione softly on the lips. "I'll do anything to be with you."
"I'd do anything for you, too." She untangled herself from Draco's cloak and said, "Let's go for a walk, okay?"
"Okay." Draco put his arm around her shoulders and led her in the direction of the Quidditch field.
"They can't keep us apart," he said.
"Nope. We won't let them, will we?"
"Definitely not. We'll be together forever."
