"Daddy, are you awake?"
Nate opened his eyes and found his 4 years old daughter looking at him hugging a stuffed lion and a very scared look on her face .
"Hey, princess, why are you already awake?"
He perfectly knows his daughter is a light sleeper and there's nothing that scares her more than thunders. In fact, hearing the dreadful noises outside, he wondered how much time she waited before coming to him.
"I'm scared"
He lifted the covers and made room for her, careful not to wake his wife.
Rosie climbed on the bed and hugged his father when she heard another loud thumper.
"It's ok Rosie, you're safe"
She seemed to calm down a bit, but as she looked at him , he saw wide eyes ready to spill a whole lot of tears.
"Come here, baby girl".
He lifted her up and put her in between Jenny and himself. He then took her daughter's little hand and put it on her wife's large belly. After a few seconds, Rosie quickly removed her hand and looked at her father.
"It's ok princess, that's your brother"
"He hurt mommy?"
He wanted to laugh out loud, but his little princess worried face made his heart melt.
"No Rosie, it's just his way to tell us he's here. He kicked your hand cause he knew it was you"
Nothing had ever shined more than the big smile he received from his daughter at that sentence.
"When is he going to be here?"
"Soon princess"
"Do I get to play with him?"
"Yes honey, you're going to play with him, and you're going to show him a lot of things. You're going to be a big sister an even if at the beginning he's going to be almost always asleep, and he's not going to talk or walk like you do now, he's going to love you very much."
"I'm like uncle Dan?"
He stifled a laugh again before speaking again "Yes princess. Uncle Dan loves your mommy very much and he's always there when it matters, he loves her, plays with her, and protects her"
When she didn't answered him right away, he looked at her daughter, and she seemed to be as deep in thought as a 4 years old can be.
He heard a very loud thumper and then saw his wife sleepy smile, and he knew she was awake.
"Hey baby girl, are you scared?" She said.
Rosie, until then busy staring at her mother's belly, with her hands on it determined to feel her little brother again, looked at her mother
"No mommy, baby's scared. I kiss and he's not afraid anymore"
Just like that, she lowered her face and kissed soundly her mother's belly
"Love you S'bastian. You safe with us."
Tears welled up in Jenny's eyes, while Nate hugged his daughter.
"You're right princess, you're right" he whispered kissing her head, while she was dozing off.
"She's amazing. You're an amazing dad, and although Dan has always protected me, I'll never feel as safe as I feel when I'm with you. I love you"
"After everything we've been through , I still feel like I don't deserve all this, I still feel like everything's going to disappear and I'm going to wake up without your kisses and Rosie's rambling. It's my biggest fear and believe me Jen, I'm going to do Everything that is in my power, the possible, the impossible and the unthinkable to keep you always safe."
She was openly crying by now, and she knew that no words could've possibly voiced the love she was feeling, so she cupped his face in her hands and kissed him with everything she had.
"I love you Nathaniel Archibald."
"I love you too, Jennifer Archibald"
