Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter. Sadly.

Red hair burning like fire against the cool green grass, Lily rolled down the hill, her laughter ringing through the air.

"Come on Sev! Hurry up!" she called, running back to the top of the hill and beckoning anxiously. Severus trudged morosely up the slope, and settled down next to her, looking cautious as she pulled a little bag out of the pocket of her sweater.

"Look Sev, my parents sent me a bag of these. They're called M&M's! We eat them all the time at home", Lily said excitedly, offering the open bag to Severus. He slowly reached into the bag and gingerly placed one in his mouth, relaxing under Lily's gaze.

"How was your first week?" he asked softly, sadly fingering the little box of chocolates in his pocket, which he had bought with his meager allowance to give to Lily.

"It was okay. My classes are really interesting, but those boys from the train have been bothering me." Lily leaned back against a tree, organizing her candies into rows by color.

"Potter and his friends? Don't worry about them Lily, they're total idiots."

"I suppose...how was your week? Find any friends in Slytherin?" Lily inquired, glancing up.

"I guess. No one as nice as you though", Severus said shyly, looking at Lily in thinly veiled admiration.

"Thanks Sev. That's too bad, everyone in Gryffindor is really nice! This school is so big though, it's hard to find classes, but luckily our prefect is-"

"You have a leaf in your hair Lily" Severus interrupted, leaning in close to her and gently disentangling the leaf from the ends of Lily's hair; she cocked her head to the side, looking quizzically at Severus. He pulled back slowly, looking solemnly at Lily, and opened his mouth to speak. However, a loud voice split the air, distracting them both.

"Oy, Evans! What are you doing with that slimy git?" Lily and Severus looked around, and watched in distaste as James Potter walked up the hill to stand over the pair, casting a shadow on their upturned faces.

"Come on Evans, you don't want to be fraternizing with the Slytherins, especially not slimeballs like this one," James proclaimed loudly, glaring down at Snape.

"Severus is my friend, which is more than I can say for you," Lily stated coldly in response, grabbing Severus' hand and standing up. "Come on Sev. Let's find somewhere we won't be bothered by big-headed idiots."

She pulled Severus up and marched away, still holding his hand, leaving behind a stunned James and her blanket and candies.

"That girl..wow" James said, watching Lily walk away and staring jealously at Severus' elated face as he turned to glance back at James.

"Thank you Lily", Severus whispered into Lily's ear as they walked back up to the castle together.
