Eric Forman was nervous. This wasn't your usual "asking a girl to the dance" nervousness. This even exceeded how he felt when proposing. No this was a completely new and different type of nervousness. After nearly a year away Eric was finally coming home.
He sat in the taxi on the way home. It was New Years Eve and he knew his parents were throwing their annual party. "What a time to come home" he mused quietly to himself. Eric wondered how he would fit in with his friends now. They had been through many changes while he was gone. Hyde's marriage and subsequent divorce, Jackie and Fez dating, and Kelso moving away had all happened this year. The only people who wrote were his parents and oddly enough Leo. It seemed as if everyone had forgotten about him. More importantly it seemed that she had forgotten about him. He wondered how they would react. Would Fez and Kelso be excited to see him? Would Hyde act apathetic? Would dad call him a dumbass again? Would she hate him for leaving? Not for the first time, Eric debated whether to show up at all.
He could see his house steadily approaching. As the taxi stopped in front of his house he could see the lights on and Kelso saying something about bottle rockets. Amused, he trudged up his driveway and promptly felt his heart skip a beat.
There she was right in front of him, sitting on the Vista Cruiser where they experienced their best and worst moments together. Observing her closely she looked very sad if not downright depressed. As usual when Donna was sad Eric became sad as well. Deciding to break the silence, he said the only thing he could say to the love of his life.
"Happy New Year"
