A/N: Another one of my ten minute "ZOMG INSPIRATION!!!" fics. This fic isn't really based on any Myst events. It is, however, set between Riven and Book of D'ni. Also, I'm throwing out the "Trap Book" concept and I'm going to assume that Gehn in on some Prison Age somewhere.
This is also a gift fic for ublerlutra, aka Three-Eyed Squirrels.
Almost all the dialogue is from "Confrontation" from Jekyll and Hyde, which is an amazing musical that everyone should see. I did have to edit it a bit to fit, though.
Hyde Complex
It was night on Myst. The stars twinkled brightly in the sky, the full moon illuminated the path. The night was bright and beautiful. But I saw none of the beauty. Neither stars nor moon could comfort me. Thoughts pounded through my head like a steady drumbeat. I knew that, somewhere amongst those stars, Riven's life was ending. And I knew, too, that there was a star for. . . him.
"Am I a good man?" I murmured aloud, "Am I a mad man? It's such a fine line. . ."
I could hear his voice now, clear as crystal, as though he were beside me again.
"Did you really think," he seethed, "That I would ever let you go?" I shook my head, trying to clear my head of him.
I whispered, "All that you are is a face in the mirror. I close my eyes and you'll disappear." My father laughed.
"I'm what you face when you face in the mirror! Long as you live, I will still be here!"
I was angry now. Even after he is gone, his presence is still so strong!
"All that you are is the end of a nightmare!" I said, voice rising, "All that you are is a dying scream! After tonight I will end this demon dream!"
My father smiled, as though he was speaking to a child.
"This is not a dream, my son, and it will never end. This one is the nightmare that goes on!"
"Soon you will die and my memory will hide you! You cannot choose but to lose control!" I shouted. Gehn chuckled, lowering his voice to a whisper.
"You can't control me, I live deep inside you!"
"I don't need you to survive like you need me!" I shouted, hearing my own voice echoing around the island. Gehn, too, was yelling now.
"I'll live inside you forever!"
"NO!"
"My eyes will watch you all the time!"
"NO!!"
"And I know that, now and forever, you'll never be able to separate your shadow from mine!"
I lowered my voice to an angry murmur now.
"Can't you see? It's over now! It's time to die!"
He laughed, "Oh not I, only you!"
"Damn you, Gehn! Leave me be!"
"Can't you see? You are me!"
"Maker damn you, Gehn! Take all your evil deeds and rot in hell!"
"I'll see you there, Atrus!"
I clutched my head in my hands and screamed,
"NEVER!"
