Days like These
Jack moved as slowly as possible, wincing each time the twigs cracked beneath his feet. Every footstep, every breath, even every beat of his heart could give him away. Quickly he pressed his back up against a tree. In the distance, more noise could be heard. Jack held his gun to his chest like it was his one true love.
Someone was getting closer. Whoever it was, it obviously wasn't concerned with concealing his approach. Keeping his head low, Jack bolted from the cover of the tree and fired in the direction of his attacker. They returned fire and missed him by a hair.
Jack leapt over a fallen tree and made his way for a rock formation a few feet ahead. The years had kept him in shape. Traveling to distant worlds and out running enemy Jaffa was better experience for times like these than any boot camp exercises.
Suddenly, enemy fire came from both sides, and it was with a buried since of panic that Jack realized he was surrounded. He managed to make it to the safety of the rocks before firing back. The splatter of red and orange paint signaled the downfall of one of his opponents. But the other three got out of range in plenty of time, forcing Jack to duck and listen.
It was very quiet. Suddenly without warning, he was surrounded. Teal'c approached from the front, surprising Jack completely.
"Are you ready to face defeat Colonol O'Neil?" He asked, grinning slightly as he raised his weapon.
"Never!" Jack raised his own gun but was struck in his right shoulder. "Ow!"
Splat! Splat! Splat! A chorus of paintballs exploded off of Jack's body from all sides. Jack held up his hands in defeat.
"All right, all right, you win!" He shouted.
Daniel approached Jack and clapped him on the shoulder.
"I knew you'd get cocky if you could just take me down," He gloated.
Jack raised an eyebrow. "You mean this was your plan?"
"To be perfectly fair," General Hammond spoke up. "It was my idea to gang up on you."
Jack threw up his hands.
"Oh come on Jack," Sam chided playfully. "You have to accept defeat once in a while."
"Not at paintball I don't." Jack checked his CO2 container and his ammunition. "Who's up for another round?"
"I am ready Colonel O'Neil," Teal'c replied. "I must admit this paintball of yours is far more recreational than your boxing. Though I fail to see why hunting one another down is considered recreation."
"Now, Teal'c, it's a healthy and active sport," Hammond said. "And it's excellent for target practice. If they'd used paintball when I was in basic training we'd have been better prepared for the real thing."
"Yeah, besides, haven't you ever wanted to shoot someone without a consequence?" Daniel asked.
Jack, Sam, and Hammond exchanged glances. Somehow it never surprised either of them. Daniel was the quiet one after all.
"All right, all right," Jack cut in. "Enough banter. Clear out and hide. If you're not out of sight in one minute I'll take you all out."
Sam grinned affectionately before taking off. Daniel shrugged and went in another direction. The general and Teal'c separated as well. Jack remained around the rock and kept an eye on his watch.
After all, days like this were few and far between.
